[Yamagata] Ginzan Onsen: A popular hot spring resort with a Taisho era feel
table of contents
Ginzan Onsen is a popular hot spring resort with a Taisho era romantic atmosphere
Ginzan Onsen (Obanazawa City), located about an hour's drive from Yamagata Airport, is one of the most popular hot springs in Yamagata Prefecture, which is home to many hot springs. The name dates back to the Edo period, and comes from the "Nobezawa Silver Mine," which flourished as a large silver mine at the time. It is also famous as the setting for the TV drama "Oshin," and even today you can see the townscape reminiscent of the Taisho era
The cityscape shows different faces depending on the season
Although the hot spring resort offers stunning scenery in each of the four seasons, it is winter that makes it look the most romantic. Located in the mountains, it is cold and snowy during the cold season, but the gas lamps that light up the hot spring town create a warm atmosphere, making the silver world of snow a nostalgic sight. As vehicles are not allowed to run on the road, guests must park their cars in the inn's parking lot and explore the hot spring town on foot, but the lack of car traffic makes for a leisurely stroll
The hot spring town is home to not only traditional inns, but also restaurants, souvenir shops, public baths and foot baths, which you can use as a place to take a break between strolls. The buildings are three- and four-story wooden balconies, creating a nostalgic, old-fashioned atmosphere. It's not an easy place to get to, but its location in the mountains makes it a hot spring resort where you can experience the four seasons
