[Aomori Prefecture] Aiming to realize the Aomori Derby in Aomori, Hachinohe, and Hirosaki [Introduction to professional sports in the six Tohoku prefectures]

As of April 11, 2023, Aomori Prefecture has two professional sports teams: the Aomori Watts in basketball (B League) and Vanraure Hachinohe in soccer (J League)

The Aomori Watts are doing well in the 2022-23 season, and as of April 11th, they are in 5th place in the B2 East Division (26 wins, 30 losses), just one game behind third place, which would allow them to advance to the playoffs

Vanraure Hachinohe has also had a good start to the 2023 season, currently in 9th place

As the first professional sports team in Aomori Prefecture, we have been conveying the joy of watching professional sports to the people of the prefecture

Since joining the B2 East Division in 2016, the team has not fallen to B3 and is currently aiming for promotion to B1

In the Aomori dialect, "very hot" is said as "waaatsu," and to express strength or speed, words such as "watts, wattsudo" or "wattsuri" are used

The team name is filled with the hope that players and boosters will come together as one and get hot in both mind and body as they play a passionate, powerful and speedy game

The team colors are the blue flame of burning passion and the red of an apple, which represents the brightness of a hot boost. The blue flame in the logo depicts the topography of Aomori Prefecture, representing the passionate feelings of the people of Aomori Prefecture

Before 2010, the "Aomori Professional Basketball Team Establishment Preparation Office" was established, initiated by Nakamura, the chairman of Hachinohe Kosei Gakuin, and plans were made to launch a professional team, but the team was unable to secure sponsors and activities were halted

However, by making the entire Aomori prefecture their new base, they were able to raise funds from sponsors and announce themselves as a professional team


  • July 2012: Decision made to join the bj League and Aomori Sports Creation was established
  • 2014: First time participating in the bj League in the 2013-14 season, the team advanced to the playoffs
  • 2016: Decided to join the East Division of the newly established B.LEAGUE (B2) from the 2016-17 season
  • April 2023: The team will continue to perform well in the 2022-23 season and aim to reach the playoffs

Vanraure Hachinohe (Football: Meiji Yasuda Life J League)

The club's home town is the Sanya Kamikita region in the eastern part of Aomori Prefecture, which includes Hachinohe City, and it will join the J3 League in the 2023 season

The team has started well this season, with a decent record of 2 wins, 1 loss and 3 draws as of April 9th

Vanraure is a combination of the Italian words Derivante, meaning "origin," and Australe, meaning "southern town."

The team's origins are represented in Nango, Hachinohe City, where the operating company is located. The team emblem depicts squid, a Hachinohe specialty, and Nango soba noodles, and the team colors are the blue of Hachinohe's sea and the green of Nango's mountains

The team was founded in 2006 by Hachinohe Technical SC and Nango FC

When the J3 League was launched in 2014, "we applied to join, but our home ground at the time, Takamoriyama Athletic Park Stadium, did not meet the stadium requirements, so we started out in the JFL

In 2016, the team's home ground, Hachinohe Tagata Multipurpose Sports Ground, met the requirements for J3 participation and obtained a J3 license, but they were unable to achieve the results necessary to be promoted to J3, so they continued in the JFL

In the 2018 season, the club finished third in the JFL, and on November 20th they were approved to join J3, where they remain to this day


What is Vanraure Hachinohe's hometown?

It consists of 16 cities and towns in the Sanpachi Kamikita region, centered around Hachinohe and Misawa cities in eastern Aomori Prefecture

Their home stadium is the Prifoods Stadium (Hachinohe City Taga Multipurpose Sports Ground) in Hachinohe City, which was built specifically for Vanraure to meet J3 standards

In addition, the team is asking its hometown local government to renovate several stadiums, including the Higashi Athletic Park Athletics Stadium in Hachinohe City, to J3 standards
