Yonezawa City, a place associated with the famous Sengoku general "Uesugi Kenshin"! Walking with the Uesugi family

Uesugi Takayama

Yonezawa City was ruled by the Uesugi clan for 272 years. The days that the Uesugi clan lived in Yonezawa were a series of hardships

The founder of the Uesugi clan was the famous Sengoku period general, Uesugi Kenshin . Kenshin's successor, Kagekatsu, served as one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Five Elders and ruled over 1.2 million koku of land in Aizu. However, in 1600, the Western Army was defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara, and Kagekatsu, who was an enemy of Tokugawa Ieyasu, had his territory reduced to 300,000 koku in Yonezawa. His territory, his source of income, was cut by 75%... In such a situation, the first thing that would normally come to mind would be personnel reductions. However, Kagekatsu refused to reduce his retainers at all, choosing to walk the difficult path together.

However, the Yonezawa domain's hardships continued. Tsunakatsu, the third lord of the domain and grandson of Kagekatsu, died suddenly at the young age of 25. As he had no children yet, the family and domain faced the threat of abolition due to the lack of a successor. Although they narrowly avoided abolition by adopting a son, they were unable to avoid the punishment of having their territory reduced to 150,000 koku. Compared to the time of Aizu rule, their territory was now only one-eighth of what it had been. The domain's finances were steadily declining, and they were in a state of debt hell

The person who saved the situation was Uesugi Yozan, who became the 9th feudal lord

"If you try, it will be done. If you don't try, it won't be done. If something doesn't get done, it's because people don't try."

He is also famous for this famous quote. Yozan became the lord of the domain at the age of 17. He personally implemented great frugality, created rice fields, developed irrigation systems, and undertook various initiatives to promote industry, all of which were a great success. He also focused on education, opening the domain school, Kojokan. By the time Yozan passed away at the age of 72, the domain had almost paid off all of its debts. He truly embodied the spirit of "if you try, you can do it," and was a great man who built the foundation for modern-day Yonezawa City
