Head to the highest subway station in Japan and enjoy Sendai's two major theme parks!
table of contents

This is a panoramic view of Sendai city. Where do you think this view is from?
This is actually a subway station!
The highest subway station in Japan! "Yagiyama Zoological Park Station"
Sendai is famous for having subway tracks that cross over roads, but now it also has the highest elevation subway station in Japan. Yagiyama Zoological Park Station on the Tozai Subway Line, which just opened in 2016, is the western terminus of the Tozai Line and is the highest elevation subway station in Japan!
It's interesting to come and see the view of Japan's tallest subway station as a new tourist attraction in Sendai, but there's another reason why we recommend this station
Near Yagiyama Zoological Park Station are two major theme parks that have been loved by Sendai residents for over 50 years!

Yagiyama Bennyland, where dreams roll!

The famous jingle from that commercial, which could almost be called the prefectural anthem of Miyagi Prefecture,
became nationally famous when a parody version of it was used as the cheering song for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. The amusement park known for that song is Yagiyama Benyland.
Yagiyama Benyland is a long-established theme park that has been around for over 50 years.
It is one of the leading theme parks in Sendai, a city of one million people.
The recommended attraction is the roller coaster "Corkscrew"
As its name suggests, the Corkscrew course is appealing because of its screw-like structure.
The thrill of being tossed around on the multiple spiral courses is very popular with people of all ages, from students to adults!
Bennyland has something for everyone, from thrill-seekers to family-friendly attractions, and another must-try attraction is the go-karts

"Go-karts are everywhere, aren't they!" Don't underestimate them just yet!
In fact, the go-kart track at Benny Land was completely renovated in 2006!
The track was moved and is now a long course of about 400m, which is surprisingly technical.
If you're a man who wants to show off to your kids or girlfriend how cool you are, be sure to give it a try!

Yagiyama Zoo is where you can have a hands-on experience with animals!
A recommended spot at Yagiyama Zoo is Fureai no Oka

Renovated in 2017, "Fureai no Oka" (Hill of Interaction) is a facility where you can have direct contact with animals. Its
appeal lies in the opportunity to observe animal behaviors you wouldn't normally see in a zoo, such as feeding goats and rabbits, or watching birds take flight up close during free flight!
There's another hidden gem at Yagiyama Zoological Park that I highly recommend.
Here it is.
This is a statue of Babe Ruth.
Why is there a statue of a Major League superstar in a zoo?
Actually, there's an unexpected connection between Babe Ruth and Yagiyama Zoological Park.
The site where the African Zoological Park of Yagiyama Zoological Park now stands was once a baseball field.
In 1934 (Showa 9), a friendly match was held between the American Major League All-Stars and the All-Japan team, and this Yagiyama site was one of the venues for that game.
It was at this Yagiyama baseball field that Babe Ruth, a hero of Major League Baseball, hit his first home run in Japan.
In commemoration of his achievements, a bronze statue of Babe Ruth was erected in 2002 (Heisei 14) at the site where Yagiyama Stadium once stood.
Baseball fans who have come to support Rakuten should definitely come and see the Babe Ruth statue in Yagiyama!
And why not take a moment to reflect on the legendary game that once took place in Sendai?
