Azuma Kofuji, one of the volcanoes in the Azuma mountain range
Azuma Kofuji is one of the volcanoes in the Azuma Mountain Range, a vast mountain range in Fukushima Prefecture. The surrounding area features a horseshoe-shaped caldera and the mysteriously colored Goshikinuma Lake, and has long been known as a scenic spot. Most of the current topography was created in prehistoric times, with Azuma Kofuji, a pyroclastic cone, encircling the stratovolcano to the north

Although this volcano once erupted lava, it now boasts a serene appearance that delights climbers. Azuma Kofuji can be seen from a wide area within Fukushima Prefecture. It sits atop the base of the volcano, and is named after its shape, which resembles a miniature Mount Fuji. From afar, it looks like a tiny pyroclastic cone, but if you climb up close, you can really feel its overwhelming size
The scenery of Azuma-Kofuji is especially spectacular in autumn. The colors of the trees in the surrounding mountains change dramatically, ushering in the season of spectacular autumn foliage. Well-maintained hiking trails allow visitors to enjoy the alpine flora and other natural scenery during the fall foliage season, soaking up the natural scenery. From the surrounding ridges, you can see Azuma-Kofuji's crater from directly above. During the fall foliage season, the spectacular view of the pyroclastic cone blends beautifully with the surrounding foliage, making it a must-see for first-time visitors. While hiking becomes more difficult in winter, you can view Azuma-Kofuji capped with snow from the plains of Fukushima Prefecture. Its snow-capped beauty rivals that of the magnificent Mount Fuji. If the snow-capping season arrives earlier, you can enjoy the view alongside the autumn foliage. This ever-changing landscape changes every year. The colors of the autumn foliage also change, so it's recommended to visit annually
If you climb the mountain, you can also enjoy the geology of Azuma Kofuji. It is interesting to discover remnants of ancient eruptions and observe the changes in Goshikinuma
