Kesennuma Oshima

[Miyagi] 3 recommended scenic spots along the coast

Along the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, you can enjoy beautiful scenery and a wide variety of seafood delicacies.
The Sanriku Sea receives abundant nutrients from the rivers flowing from the surrounding mountains, making it an ideal fishing ground for oyster farming.
Matsushima, selected as one of Japan's three most scenic spots, offers oyster specialties in season.
Furthermore, the area is known for its scenery, praised by writers such as Matsuo Basho, and features a spectacular array of unusually shaped rock formations woven into the ria coastline.

There are some uniquely shaped islands in Matsushima Bay, collectively known as the Urato Islands. They are characterized by the scenery typical of remote islands, and are a place where you can relax with the seascape throughout the seasons.
In spring, rape blossoms bloom all at once in the areas facing the sea on the Urato Islands, creating a yellow carpet of flowers.
Many tourists travel from far and wide to see this spectacular view, and it is one of Miyagi Prefecture's famous flower spots.

In Minami Sanriku, Miyagi Prefecture, the coast is lined with rugged, strangely shaped rocks, creating a unique landscape. As its name suggests, Kamiwarizaki is said to have been formed when a cliff was split in two by the power of the gods.
Large waves constantly crash into Kamiwarizaki, but the hard bedrock has withstood erosion and remains sturdy to this day.
If you choose to visit in February or October, you can watch the sunrise from between the cliffs of Kamiwarizaki.

・Kesennuma Oshima

Among the islands off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, Kesennuma Oshima is particularly famous as the largest.
Due to its lush green environment, Kesennuma Oshima is sometimes referred to as the Green Pearl.
Surrounded by a vast ocean and with an elevation of 235 meters, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view from the top of Kesennuma Oshima.
The terrain around Kesennuma is also lined with rugged, strangely shaped rocks, just like Minami Sanriku.
In some places, huge stones are lined up like pillars, making it a recommended spot for experiencing the power of nature. Another attraction of visiting Kesennuma is the opportunity to savor its local specialty, shark fin dishes.
