When it comes to souvenirs from Iwaki, is it that sweet? Or that local sake?
7 Delicious Souvenirs from Iwaki
The well-known "standard souvenirs" are great, but if you're looking to break out of your routine or are wondering if there's anything even more special, Iwaki has a variety of delicious specialties to recommend to people like you
We've picked out some great items that will make you want to go to Iwaki to get your hands on them
Takachi's "Give Me a Sea Bream"
Iwaki's kamaboko shop, Takasen, makes a variety of unique kamaboko, including standard kamaboko and fried kamaboko, which is made only once a month and sold by reservation, as well as grilled horse mackerel kamaboko, popo-yaki style sanma kamaboko, and crab shell kamaboko, all of which are highly recommended

But if I had to choose one, this would be it. Not only is the product name "Tai for you" impressive, but the shape of a whole sea bream and its incredible size make a big impact. And yet, the price is reasonable, making it the perfect souvenir
Incidentally, this dish uses sea bream and cod, and also contains onions. It looks like grilled fish cake, but when you eat it, it has a crispy yet soft texture and a subtle sweetness.
It's delicious as is, but the flavor is even better when you warm it up a little. You
can also lightly boil it and top it with a stir-fry-style sauce, or deep-fry it whole to make a hearty main dish.
In addition to the Takasen direct sales store, it can also be purchased at roadside stations such as Yotsukura Port

Kotori Confectionery's "Fudge"
Kotori Confectionery is located near Iwaki-Yumoto Station, facing a small park. The cozy shop is filled with butter cakes and cookies made with carefully selected ingredients

They all look very simple. But with just one bite, a flavor that you'd call "rich and satisfying" fills your mouth, and the aftertaste is exceptional.
It's easy to see why there are rumors that many people come to Iwaki just to buy the sweets from this shop.
Besides baked goods, another must-try at this shop is their fudge. It looks like caramel at first glance, but it's a British confection that crumbles delicately in your mouth.
In addition to the classic "Shioyazaki Salt Vanilla Milk Fudge," they also offer mango milk fudge and pineapple milk fudge (pictured) during the summer. You can enjoy a delightful sweetness with each one.

JF Fukushima Fisheries Federation's "Fukushima Sea Treasures"
Iwaki Onahama Port has long been famous for its delicious bonito catches, but after the nuclear accident, it suffered major damage from negative rumors

This canned product was created to widely publicize the safety and security of bonito landed at Onahama Port. It is
bonito flakes preserved in oil, made from bonito caught by the Daiichi Juwa Maru in the northern Pacific Ocean and landed at Onahama Port, with a light and refreshing taste. Each can contains 80g, making it very convenient to use. It's
handy to keep on hand to mix into salads and omelets, use as a topping, or mix with mayonnaise to make a sandwich filling.
You can get it at Lalamew, Sky Store, and supermarkets in Iwaki City

Tamago no Sato's "Castelar Cake"
Tamago no Sato is a shop run directly by a chicken farmer. They sell freshly laid eggs, including "Iwaki Jinyoran" eggs from chickens raised on their own farm with a focus on healthy feed, as well as sweets made with plenty of eggs

My top recommendation is "Castella Kuchen." As the name suggests, it's a confection that combines the best of both castella and baumkuchen.
The layered cross-section is beautiful, and the rich flavor of the eggs shines through in its gentle melt-in-your-mouth texture—it's a taste that everyone will love.
In addition to individually packaged slices, it's also available in a long rectangular shape.
The store also offers free coffee in its rest area, making it a great place to stop by during your sightseeing

Maruichiya's "Sea Urchin Miso"
When people in Iwaki are looking for high-end gifts, they head to Maruichiya. Their sea
urchin in shellfish, available only in spring and summer, and their signature canned sea urchin in shellfish, are undoubtedly delicious, but unfortunately, they come at a considerable price. However, if you visit the store, you'll find plenty of reasonably priced items such as dried seafood and other delicacies.

One of my recommendations is "Uni Miso." It comes in a jar and looks like typical salted sea urchin, but it's completely different. Sea urchin is mixed with miso, egg, sugar, kelp broth, and sake, resulting in a sweet and delicious taste.
It's perfect as a side dish with rice or as a snack with drinks, but you can also add a little soy sauce and use it as a filling for rice balls, or serve it as a sushi topping with grated wasabi. It pairs well with olive oil, so you can even use it as a pasta sauce.
Maruichiya has three stores in Iwaki city, and also has sales corners in Aeon Iwaki and Everya

Farmers House Sawa's "Shiitake Pickles"
Farmers House Sawa, located in Watanabe-cho, Iwaki City, takes advantage of Iwaki's climate with its long hours of sunshine to cultivate shiitake mushrooms on logs in greenhouses

Shiitake mushrooms are slowly grown and harvested from autumn to the following spring, but the pickles made with these mushrooms are outstanding. They are handmade without any artificial seasonings, colorings, preservatives, or flavorings, and the flavors of kelp stock and ginger further enhance the umami of the thick, chewy shiitake mushrooms
They're great as a snack on their own, or as an accompaniment to curry or sandwiches. They can also be used in various ways, such as in chirashi sushi or as a pasta topping.
Besides shiitake mushrooms, they also offer pickles made from seasonal vegetables, which have a natural flavor and are highly recommended, but production is limited and they often sell out.
For information on the availability of shiitake mushrooms and processed products, and where to purchase them, please contact the farm.

Shingo Sun's "Onahama Bonito Rice Crackers"
These rice crackers are made by a shop famous locally for its "Shingo-san Manju" (a type of sweet bun).
Looking at the ingredients, in addition to bonito flakes, they also use squid and octopus, so they aren't all caught in Onahama, but they are a popular Iwaki specialty among locals and have been selected as a recommended Iwaki local product.

These crackers have a robust flavor and are quite firm, so even one is satisfying. They're great not only as a snack but also pair well with alcohol.
A slightly unique way to enjoy them is as a topping for ochazuke (rice with tea), zosui (rice porridge), or ramen. The ocean flavor really stands out, and it's delicious in those dishes too.
