[Fukushima] 7 delicious souvenirs from Iwaki that you want to visit and buy even if you look for them

When it comes to souvenirs from Iwaki, it's all about those sweets. Or that local sake?

7 delicious souvenirs from Iwaki

The well-known ``teppan souvenirs'' are great, but if you want to break out of a rut or want something more special, Iwaki has a variety of delicious foods that we recommend.

Let's pick out some gems that you'll want to go to Iwaki to get your hands on.

Takachi's "Ataage Tai"

Iwaki's kamaboko shop ``Takasen'' sells standard kamaboko, fried kamaboko that is only made once a month and sold by pre-order, as well as grilled mehikari kamaboko, popo-yaki-style saury kamaboko, and crab shell kamaboko. They also make a variety of unique kamaboko, and I recommend them all.

But if I had to choose one, it would be this one. Not only is the product name ``Anata ni Agetai'', but the shape and size of a whole sea bream are quite impressive. However, the price is reasonable, making it perfect as a souvenir.

By the way, this dish uses red sea bream and cod, and also contains onions.
It looks like grilled kamaboko, but when you eat it, it has a soft texture and a slight sweetness. It's delicious as is, but the flavor becomes even better when you warm it up a little.
You can make it into a hearty main dish by boiling it lightly and then pouring it over with Happo Na-style sauce, or frying it whole.

In addition to Kisen's direct sales office, you can also purchase it at roadside stations such as Yotsukura Port.

Kotori confectionery shop's "fudge"

Kotori Confectionery Shop is located near Iwaki Yumoto Station, facing a small park. The small shop is lined with butter cakes and cookies made with carefully selected ingredients.

Everything looks very simple.
But once you take a bite, the flavor that you'll want to describe as ``nutritious'' fills your mouth, and the aftertaste is exceptionally good. I can understand the rumor that many people come to Iwaki just to buy sweets from this store.

In addition to the baked goods at this shop, you should definitely try their fudge.
It looks like caramel at first glance, but it's a British confectionery that melts in your mouth. In addition to the standard "Shioyazaki Salt Vanilla Milk Fudge", in the summer, the mango milk fudge and pineapple milk fudge shown in the photo will also be available. You can enjoy the happy sweetness of all of them.

JF Fukushima Fisheries Federation's "Fukushima Sea Treasure"

Iwaki Onahama Port has long been famous for the delicious bonito caught there, but after the nuclear power plant accident, the port suffered major damage from rumors.

This canned product was commercialized to spread awareness that bonito caught at Onahama Port is safe and secure.
A refreshing flavor made with bonito flakes marinated in oil made from bonito fish caught by the Juwa Maru No. 1 in the northern waters of the Pacific Ocean of Japan and landed at Onahama Port.
One can weighs 80G and is very easy to use. It's convenient to keep on hand, as you can mix it into salads and omelets, use it as a topping, or mix it with mayonnaise and use it as a sandwich ingredient.

You can get it at La La Mew, Sky Store, and supermarkets in Iwaki City.

"Castelakuchen" in Tamago no Sato

``Tamago no Sato'' is a shop run directly by a poultry farmer. We sell freshly laid eggs, including ``Iwaki Chiyo Eggs,'' eggs raised from chickens raised in a healthy manner on our own farm, as well as sweets made with plenty of eggs.

Among them, the most recommended is ``Castelakuhen''.
As the name suggests, it is a sweet that combines the best aspects of castella and Baumkuchen. The layered cut is beautiful, and the flavor of the egg comes alive in the gentle melt-in-the-mouth texture, making it a taste that everyone will love.
In addition to individual packages of one cut, there are also long rectangular pieces.

There is also a free coffee service in the rest area inside the store, so it is recommended to stop by on your way to sightseeing.

Maruichiya's "Uni Miso"

Maruichi-ya is where people in Iwaki go to select high-quality gifts.
The spring/summer limited edition grilled sea urchin and shellfish, as well as the shop's specialty, canned sea urchin shellfish, are definitely delicious, but they are also quite expensive. However, if you go to the store, you will find many reasonably priced items such as dried fish and delicacies.

One of the recommended dishes is ``uni miso.''
Since it is bottled, it looks like a common salted sea urchin, but it is completely different. The sea urchin is mixed with miso, eggs, sugar, kelp stock, and sake for a sweet taste. It's perfect as a companion to rice or as an accompaniment to sake, but you can also add a little soy sauce and use it as an onigiri ingredient, or add pickled wasabi as a topping for sushi. It goes well with olive oil, so it can also be used in pasta sauces.

Maruichiya has three stores in Iwaki City, as well as sales corners at Aeon Iwaki and Everia.

Farmer's House Sawano's "Log Shiitake Pickles"

Farmers House Sawa, a farm located in Watanabe-cho, Iwaki City, takes advantage of Iwaki's long sunny climate to cultivate log shiitake mushrooms inside the greenhouse.

Shiitake mushrooms, which take time to grow, are harvested from fall to spring of the following year, and the pickles made with these mushrooms are excellent. Handmade without using any chemical seasonings, colorants, preservatives, or fragrances, the flavor of the kelp stock and ginger further enhances the flavor of the thick, chewy shiitake mushrooms.

You can have it as a snack or add it to curry or sandwiches.
There are many ways to use it, such as chirashi sushi and pasta ingredients. In addition to shiitake mushrooms, they also have pickled seasonal vegetables, which are recommended for their natural flavor, but they are often sold out because production is limited.
Please contact the farm for information on the availability of shiitake mushrooms and processed products and where you can get them.

Shingo SUN's "Onahama Bonito Rice Cracker"

These rice crackers are manufactured by a shop that is locally famous for ``Shingosan Manju.''
Looking at the ingredients, in addition to bonito flakes, squid and octopus are also used, and although it is not caught in Onahama, it is an Iwaki specialty that is popular with locals, and it is also recommended as an Iwaki hometown product. It is selected.

It has a strong taste and is a fairly hard rice cracker, so it's satisfying to eat just one.
It goes well not only as a snack but also with alcohol. A slightly unique way to eat it is as a topping for ochazuke, rice porridge, or ramen. The flavor of the seaside is outstanding, and I would definitely go for it again.

There are many other Iwaki masterpieces that are only known to those in the know. This time I picked up 7 things, but that one wasn't included! Some people may be angry.

But I'm planning to cover a lot more in the future, so please bear with me.

And if you find something in this pick-up that you haven't tried yet, please give it a try. There is a high possibility that it will become a classic delicious item for yourself rather than as a souvenir
