7 delicious souvenirs from Iwaki that you should look for and buy and go home [Fukushima Prefecture]

When it comes to souvenirs from Iwaki, is it that sweet? Or that local sake?

7 Delicious Souvenirs from Iwaki

The well-known "standard souvenirs" are great, but if you're looking to break out of your routine or are wondering if there's anything even more special, Iwaki has a variety of delicious specialties to recommend to people like you

We've picked out some great items that will make you want to go to Iwaki to get your hands on them

Takachi's "Give Me a Sea Bream"

Iwaki's kamaboko shop, Takasen, makes a variety of unique kamaboko, including standard kamaboko and fried kamaboko, which is made only once a month and sold by reservation, as well as grilled horse mackerel kamaboko, popo-yaki style sanma kamaboko, and crab shell kamaboko, all of which are highly recommended

But if I had to choose one, this would be it. Not only is the product name "Tai for you" impressive, but the shape of a whole sea bream and its incredible size make a big impact. And yet, the price is reasonable, making it the perfect souvenir

By the way, this dish is made with red snapper and cod, and also contains onions. It looks like grilled kamaboko, but when you eat it, it has a soft and crispy texture with a subtle sweetness. It
's delicious as is, but the flavor becomes even more pronounced when you warm it up a little. You
can lightly boil it and then pour a thick sauce like Eight Treasures Chow Mein over it, or fry it whole to make a hearty main dish.

In addition to the Takasen direct sales store, it can also be purchased at roadside stations such as Yotsukura Port

Kotori Confectionery's "Fudge"

Kotori Confectionery is located near Iwaki-Yumoto Station, facing a small park. The cozy shop is filled with butter cakes and cookies made with carefully selected ingredients

They all look very simple, but one bite and a mouthful of flavor that you'll want to describe as "delicious" fills your mouth, with an exceptionally satisfying aftertaste.
It's no wonder that many people come to Iwaki just to buy the sweets from this shop.

In addition to the baked goods, the fudge is also a must-try at this shop. At first glance it looks like caramel, but it is a British confection that crumbles in your mouth.
In addition to the classic "Shioyazaki Salt Vanilla Milk Fudge," in the summer they also offer mango milk fudge and pineapple milk fudge, as shown in the photo. All of them are sure to leave you satisfied with their delightful sweetness.

JF Fukushima Fisheries Federation's "Fukushima Sea Treasures"

Iwaki Onahama Port has long been famous for its delicious bonito catches, but after the nuclear accident, it suffered major damage from negative rumors

This canned product was commercialized to raise awareness of the safety and security of bonito landed at Onahama Port. The bonito flakes are pickled in
oil and made from bonito caught by the No. 1 Juwa Maru in the northern Pacific waters of Japan and landed at Onahama Port, and have a refreshing flavor. At 80g per can, they're very easy to use.
Mix them into salads or omelets, use them as a topping, or toss them with mayonnaise for a sandwich filling. Keep them handy and keep them on hand.

You can get it at Lalamew, Sky Store, and supermarkets in Iwaki City

Tamago no Sato's "Castelar Cake"

Tamago no Sato is a shop run directly by a chicken farmer. They sell freshly laid eggs, including "Iwaki Jinyoran" eggs from chickens raised on their own farm with a focus on healthy feed, as well as sweets made with plenty of eggs

Our top recommendation is the "Castella Kuchen." As the name suggests, this is a sweet that combines the best of both castella and baumkuchen. The
beautifully layered cut surface and the soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture with the delicious flavor of eggs make this a flavor that everyone will love.
In addition to being individually packaged, they also have long rectangular ones available.

The store also offers free coffee in its rest area, making it a great place to stop by during your sightseeing

Maruichiya's "Sea Urchin Miso"

Maruichiya is the place where Iwaki residents go when choosing high-end gifts.
The store's specialties, such as grilled sea urchin shells, available only in spring and summer, and its canned sea urchin shells, are undoubtedly delicious, but unfortunately, they are quite expensive. However, if you visit the store, you'll find plenty of reasonably priced items, such as dried fish and delicacies.

One of the recommended products is "Uni Miso." It's bottled and looks like your typical salted sea urchin, but it's completely different. It's made by mixing sea urchin with miso, eggs, sugar, kelp stock, and sake, and has a sweet texture.
It's perfect as a rice accompaniment or a side dish for sake, but you can also add a little soy sauce to use it as a rice ball filling, or garnish it with grated wasabi for sushi. It also goes well with olive oil, so it can be used as a pasta sauce.

Maruichiya has three stores in Iwaki city, and also has sales corners in Aeon Iwaki and Everya

Farmers House Sawa's "Shiitake Pickles"

Farmers House Sawa, located in Watanabe-cho, Iwaki City, takes advantage of Iwaki's climate with its long hours of sunshine to cultivate shiitake mushrooms on logs in greenhouses

Shiitake mushrooms are slowly grown and harvested from autumn to the following spring, but the pickles made with these mushrooms are outstanding. They are handmade without any artificial seasonings, colorings, preservatives, or flavorings, and the flavors of kelp stock and ginger further enhance the umami of the thick, chewy shiitake mushrooms

Enjoy them as a snack, or as a garnish with curry or sandwiches. They can also be used in a variety of ways, such as as a topping for sushi or pasta.
In addition to shiitake mushrooms, they also offer pickled seasonal vegetables, which are also recommended for their natural flavor, but production is limited and they often sell out.
Please contact the farm for information on the availability and where to purchase shiitake mushrooms and processed products.

Shingo Sun's "Onahama Bonito Rice Crackers"

These rice crackers are made by a store famous locally for its "Shingosan Manju."
Looking at the ingredients, they contain squid and octopus in addition to bonito flakes, so they are not necessarily caught in Onahama, but they are a popular Iwaki specialty among locals and have been selected as a recommended Iwaki hometown product.

It has a strong flavor and is a fairly hard rice cracker, so even one piece is satisfying. It's not only a great snack, but also goes well with alcohol.
A slightly unique way to eat it is as a topping for ochazuke (rice with tea), zosui (rice porridge), or ramen. The sea flavor stands out, and it's also delicious.
