table of contents

Tokyo is a city filled with skyscrapers and exudes a modern atmosphere. However, what stands out in this concrete jungle are the numerous "modern buildings." Many people find the sight of modern architecture among the inorganic buildings quite charming. In this article, we will introduce some modern buildings that are worth seeing in Tokyo
Former Furukawa Gardens (Kita Ward)
The first place we'll introduce is the Kyu-Furukawa Gardens in Kita Ward. The imposing Western-style building was designed by Josiah Conder, a British architect who also designed famous buildings such as Rokumeikan and St. Nicholas Cathedral. You can enter the building by joining a guided tour, and enjoy tea in the building's tea room while looking out at the rose garden. In addition to the Western-style building, there are also Western-style gardens, Japanese gardens, tea rooms and more, making it a place full of things to see

Former Iwasaki Residence Garden (Taito Ward)
The Western-style building in this garden was also designed by Josiah Conder, just like the Western-style building in the former Furukawa Gardens. It is a dignified Western-style building with decorations in the English Jacobean and Renaissance styles seen throughout. In addition to the Western-style building, there is also a Japanese-style building and a billiards room, so if you have time, be sure to check them out as well

Bank of Japan Head Office (Chuo Ward)
The Bank of Japan Head Office, designated one of Tokyo's 50 architectural heritage sites, was designed with Belgium's central bank as a reference. The main architect involved in the design was Tatsuno Kingo, who studied under Josiah Conder. The architectural style is Nero-Baroque, a fusion of Baroque and Renaissance styles. Tours of the Bank of Japan Head Office and the Currency Museum are also available, so why not take a look at those as well?

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum (Koganei City)
Want to enjoy modern architecture, but don't have much time and would prefer to see as many as possible at once? If that sounds like you, we recommend the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. This open-air museum was established to preserve historical architecture, and over 30 buildings have been relocated and restored within the park.
