Haneto enlivens the Nebuta Festival

Haneto is written as "jumper," and literally means "jumper."

Before and after the Nebuta festival, they jump around energetically, chanting "Rassera! Rassera!" and ringing the bells attached to their bodies.

The movement of the Nebuta festival adds momentum to the festival, and the Nebuta, ohayashi music, and audience work together to enliven the festival.

It will be a test of physical strength in the heat of summer, but the taste of the beer afterward will be amazing!

If you plan to participate, don't forget to keep your legs and hips in good shape and stay hydrated at the water tank that will be moving with the Haneto group.

Can I become a Haneto even if I'm not a local?

The great thing about the Nebuta Festival is that anyone can participate as a haneto as long as they follow the simple rules.

The rules of Haneto are as follows.

  • Make it a bright festival that everyone can enjoy
  • Wear formal attire (described later) and wear a hanagasa hat.
  • Follow the instructions of the festival management committee
  • Do not bring noisemakers, firecrackers, or fireworks
  • Don't throw away empty cans
  • Don't bring a liter bottle

However, due to the influence of the new coronavirus in 2022, Haneto will require advance registration.

Local residents will also be selected by lottery, and it will be difficult to participate this year due to the high odds.

From next year onwards, it would be nice if we could go back to free participation like before.

What is Haneto's formal attire?

A complete set of formal attire can be purchased at department stores in Aomori City for around 10,000 yen.

Renting and fitting a kimono at a kimono or clothing store in the city costs about 4,000 yen, but it gets crowded, so early reservations are recommended.

The formal attire is listed on the festival's official website, and is approximately as follows.

  • Wearing a flower hat with a bean squeezer attached, a colorful ``tasuki'' (red, pink, etc.) is hung around the shoulders.
  • A ``shigoki'' is tied around the waist, and a bell and a tin bowl called ``gagashiko'' for drinking water are hung.
  • The hem of the white yukata is pulled up to the knees and a pink or blue ``okoshi'' is attached underneath.
  • Wear white tabi socks and zori sandals and tie them with a thin bean squeezer.

Origin and history of Nebuta

Nebuta is said to have its origins in Sakanoue Tamuramaro, the Great General of the Sei, who made large lanterns and played them with flutes and drums in order to lure away enemies, but Nebuta festivals are also based on events such as the Tanabata Festival and Nemuri Nagashi. seems to be true.

The current shape of Nebuta took place in the 1950s, when Nebuta master Keizo Kitagawa created a brightly shining Nebuta using a wire core and a battery and fluorescent light inside, which enhanced the artistry. It is said that

How do you make a Nebuta?

The size regulations for Nebuta are approximately 9m in width, 5m in height, and 7m in depth, and the subjects are often Japanese and Chinese legends, historical figures, Kabuki scenes, Buddhist statues, and occasionally local great figures. and taiga dramas will be featured.

Nebuta craftsmen (14 as of 2018) are in charge of all 10 steps in the production process, from deciding on the subject matter to drawing a draft (design), constructing the frame, electrical wiring, paper pasting, and coloring.

Nebuta Hayashi that moves the heart

The sound of the flute brings a sense of nostalgia with its unique melody, the gorgeous gong held in both hands called ``tefuri gong'', and the heroic sound of the drum that uplifts your mood.

The Nebuta Hayashi, which is played in the same tone over and over while the Nebuta floats are moving, is an unforgettable musical accompaniment that touches the hearts of Japanese people.
