Marumori Town is a town on the border between Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. It is a beautiful town where water, greenery, and human activities coexist

The biggest tourist attraction in Marumori Town is the Sairi Yashiki Storehouse Museum , the former residence of Saito Risuke, a wealthy merchant who prospered for seven generations from the late Edo period to the early Showa period.

This time, we will introduce Sairi Yashiki, a local museum of kura!

What is the Sairi Yashiki Kura no Kyodokan? Learn about the origin of its name!

The Kurano Local Museum Sairi Yashiki is the residence of Saito Risuke, who made a name for himself in the kimono and fabric trade from the late Edo period.
Kimono refers to silk kimonos, and fabrics refers to linen and cotton textiles. It can be thought of as an apparel manufacturer from the Edo period.

The Saito family not only produced kimonos and fabrics, but also expanded into a wide range of businesses, including miso and soy sauce brewing and sewing, and prospered for seven generations until the early Showa period. Marumori Town received a donation of the Saito family's mansion and collection, which was opened to the public as the Sairi Mansion, a local museum of the storehouse

As of 2018, 12 buildings have been registered as tangible cultural properties, proving their high historical value

But why is the Sairi Yashiki called Sairi Yashiki? It is because the head of the Saito family has inherited the name Saito Risuke for generations. Sairi is an abbreviation of Sai (Fuji) Ri (suke) .

The Saito family must have been well-liked by people at the time, as they were called by their abbreviated name
