The total area of Koiwai Farm is 3,000ha.
Its area is one of the largest in Japan. The vast 9 million tsubo farm can fit approximately 640 Tokyo Domes. There are 2,000 cows there, and it is a very popular spot that you must visit if you are in Iwate. In addition to animals such as cows and sheep, you can also enjoy gourmet foods such as soft serve ice cream and Genghis Khan.
There are also other amusement spots where you can have fun while feeling the majestic nature. This time, we will introduce some of the most attractive points about Koiwai Farm. By the way, the name of Koiwai Farm is taken from the initials of the three founders (Ono, Iwasaki, and Inoue). Many people think that it is a place name, but it is not.
You can see cows at Kamimaru Gyusha
Only 40 ha of the 3,000 ha of Koiwai Farm is accessible to the general public.
It is divided into two zones. There is ``Kamimaru Cowshed'' where you can see cows, and ``Makibaen'' which is dotted with amusement facilities and restaurants. You can see cows up close at Kamimaru Cowshed.
You can see the real movement of cows up close, especially in areas where they are grazing. One thing to keep in mind is that it is hot in the summer and the cows are grazed in the morning. In the afternoon, I'm in a cowshed with a giant electric fan. You can tour the No. 1 and No. 3 cow sheds. When the cows are not grazing, go to the barn.
Kenji Miyazawa is famous from Iwate. Kenji Miyazawa's 600-line long poem "Koiwai Farm". There is a monument with this poem in the back of the cowshed. A story about "Koiwai Farm" is engraved on it. Recommended as a little-known tourist spot.
After the cowshed, 100% raw milk soft serve ice cream
The long-awaited soft serve ice cream is available at Makibaen.
Makibaen is located on the opposite side of the road from Kamimaru Cowshed. Long lines are the default at Makibaen's soft serve ice cream house. However, it is said to be worth the wait. The 100% raw milk soft serve ice cream tastes even better, especially if you eat it after touring the cowshed. Many people find the soft serve ice cream here to be the most delicious.
Genghis Khan from the sheep show is also ant
Makibaen also has a Genghis Khan House.
Lamb from Koiwai Farm is a hot topic of conversation. It's so fresh that there's no odor at all. Even people who don't like Genghis Khan can enjoy it. The Koiwai Sheep Show will be held at Makibaen (starting April 21st in 2017, twice daily at 11am and 2pm). You can see how a sheepdog and shepherd work together to drive a flock of sheep into a small fence. It has a reputation for being quite interesting. It might be a good idea to watch this before eating Genghis Khan.
Makibaen also has many amusements. The spectacular view point of a single cherry tree is also a must-see
Makibaen is also full of amusement spots. The water hamster activity (open from 9:00 to 17:00, 500 yen for 4 minutes) is especially popular. Enter the big sphere and run on the water.
Armadillo Ball (open from 10am to 4:30pm; 1,000 yen for a group of 2 people) is also popular, and is basically the land version of the water hamster. Enter the giant sphere and slide down the slope.
The lone cherry tree that became a hot topic in the NHK drama "Donto Hare" is located at Koiwai Farm. A single cherry tree with Mt. Iwate in the background is a very beautiful sight. If you go to Koiwai Farm, this is a place you definitely want to see.
