[Iwate Prefecture] Introducing "Senbero Sakaba" in Hanamaki, Kitakami, Oshu, and Ichinoseki, which are connected by the Tohoku Shinkansen!

The Tohoku Shinkansen south of Morioka City in Iwate Prefecture has four stations, starting from the north: Shin-Hanamaki, Kitakami, Mizusawa-Esashi, and Ichinoseki, and each station attracts not only local residents but also tourists and businessmen from outside the prefecture. It is also a station where many people get on and off.

There are many unique restaurants in Hanamaki City, Kitakami City, Oshu City, and Ichinoseki City (this is the official name for administrative purposes) where these stations are located, and some of them are ``Senbero Sakaba'', which are loved by the locals. Masu.

In this article, we will introduce one recommended Senbero Sakaba in each of these four cities.

What is the definition of “senbero”?

The word originally referred to a bar where you could get very drunk for 1,000 yen, but now it has come to mean a bar where you can get 2 to 3 drinks and snacks for 1,000 yen.

In this article, we have defined the criteria for certification as a "Senbero" bar as follows.

  • You can order two glasses of alcohol (type and quantity are free) and one snack in addition to the appetizer and drink it for less than 1,000 yen.
  • Set prices such as "Senbero Set" are available for less than 1,000 yen.
  • Family restaurants where you can eat rice crackers are not eligible.

We also introduce sets that cost less than 1,500 yen as "high-priced rice crackers," but we appreciate your understanding.

Please note that prices in the article include tax unless otherwise stated and are as of the end of September 2023.

Hanamaki's ``Senbero'' is available at the cafe ``Yae Furin''!

Shin-Hanamaki Station on the Shinkansen has few restaurants in front of it, so if you want to enjoy Senbero, it would be better to transfer to the Kamaishi Line and go to Hanamaki Station on the conventional line.

For the ``senbero'' here, we recommend the senbero set from ``Yae Furin,'' located about 1 km from Hanamaki Station.

At this cafe, whose name is ``yae'', taken from the name of the owner who retired from a coffee company, and represents the baked gluten that his grandfather used to make, you can enjoy healthy snacks made with baked gluten.

The bright wood-grained interior of the restaurant has 5 counter seats and 6 table seats, and it is one of the few places in Iwate Prefecture where you can enjoy grilled gluten-free dishes such as chili, nanban, and potatoes.

The evening drink set (1,000 yen) includes one large bottle of beer, shochu high, highball, wine, and sake (Nanbu Seki).

In that case, you can have two bowls of either of them and two snacks made with grilled wheat gluten.

``Ajikobo Yuzu'' where you can enjoy ``Senbero'' in Kitakami

From Ajikobo Yuzu official Facebook

This restaurant serves charcoal-grilled yakitori and creative Japanese cuisine, located about a 5-minute walk from the east exit of Kitakami Station in the direction of City Hall.

The interior of the store, which has a conspicuous orange signboard, is bright and clean, making it easy for families and single women to enter the store with peace of mind.

From Ajikobo Yuzu official Facebook

Yakitori, yakiton, etc. start at 130 yen (for gizzard and skin skewers), and a la carte dishes such as fried chicken cartilage and charcoal-grilled shishamo, as well as various drinks, are often priced under 500 yen. ” You can have a drink.

Among these a la carte dishes, the cheese tofu (480 yen) is especially recommended, and it is said that many regular customers become addicted to the cheese-like flavor of the tofu and keep coming back for more.

In addition, homemade salt ponzu sauce is placed on the tables and counters inside the store, and it is popular that you can freely enjoy different flavors.

Great value dinner drink set

This set is priced at 2,300 yen, so it cannot be called a ``Senbero'', but it is recommended because the set includes a wonderful selection of snacks.

You can order up to 2 drinks of any kind, and the food comes with a small bowl of seasonal ingredients, 3 pieces of today's sashimi, 2 pieces of yakitori, 1 dish of the owner's choice, and what's more, it even comes with ochazuke.

If you ordered it normally, it would cost more than 3,000 yen, so why not order it as if you had enjoyed Senbero twice?

Oshu's recommendation is the unique "Yakitori Dojo Michinoku"

It's located on the alley behind the Mizusawa Grand Hotel on the street in front of Mizusawa Station, and you'll be surprised by its shack-like exterior made of corrugated iron, so you might be hesitant to enter for the first time.

Inside the store, there are many large hornet nests hanging from the ceiling, and miscellaneous small items are lined up on the counter, creating an indescribably chaotic world.

However, the yakitori (motsuyaki), rather than yakitori, prepared by the artisan-like owner is exceptionally delicious, combined with the flavor of the sauce that has been used for over 60 years.

As for the snacks, they only have yakiton and pickles, and there is no menu, so I don't know the price, but you can enjoy 10 yakiton with a bottle of beer in the ``Senbero''.

We also recommend the Shimeno Ramen with its refreshing soy sauce flavor.

Although it is far from Mizusawa-Esashi Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen, Senbero Sakaba is well worth a visit even if you take a taxi.
