An active volcano whose activity continues to be observed today

Mount Adatara is an active volcano in Fukushima Prefecture that has been beloved by many people, having appeared in the ancient Manyoshu and Takamura Kotaro's "Chieko Sho." Located on the southern side of Bandai-Asahi National Park, it has also been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and Utsukushima's 100 Famous Mountains. Phreatic eruptions were observed about 100 years ago, and even after the Heisei era began, constant monitoring has been carried out due to the release of volcanic gases and increased geothermal activity

With its relatively gentle slopes, Mount Adatara is a mountain recommended even for beginner hikers.
Mount Adatara stands at an elevation of 1700m, with multiple peaks stretching for approximately 9km from its center. The climb offers varied terrain, including craters and rocky surfaces, and allows hikers to enjoy clusters of flowers and plants. Above all, the view from the summit is spectacular, with a 360-degree panoramic vista that delights hikers. There are several entry and exit points, including Okudake, Shiozawa, Ishiseki, Noji Onsen, and Yokomuki Onsen, each offering multiple routes. Near all of these entry and exit points are hot spring resorts such as Shiozawa Onsen, Dake Onsen, Numajiri Onsen, Okudake Onsen, Noji Onsen, and Yokomuki Onsen, making them popular spots to relax and rejuvenate after a hike.

The Adatara Valley Nature Trail is also popular, and originates just below the ridge of Mt. Adatara. It runs along the upstream Harase River, commonly known as the Karasu River, at an altitude of approximately 950-1,000m. The trail is approximately 1km long and takes about an hour to walk

Some of the hiking trails have ropeways, making it easy for beginners and those who just want to enjoy the scenery. The autumn foliage season is so popular that special services are even run. The trees, colored red and yellow, look like a carpet. The peak of the autumn leaves begins near the summit in late September, and slowly trickles down to the base by early November

In addition, you can enjoy alpine plants from spring to summer, and ski at Adatara Kogen Ski Resort in winter. Tourists visit this mountain all year round, making it one of the most visited mountains in the prefecture, alongside Mount Bandai
