Elm is a large shopping mall located in Goshogawara City.

Elm is a large shopping mall located in Goshogawara City, Aomori Prefecture. The interior of the store will be renovated in March 2024, when Ito-Yokado will withdraw from the store on the second floor. The Fresh Market was also renovated for the first time in 10 years and reopened on March 1st of this year. A large number of shoppers visited the store on the first day of its reopening, and it was so crowded that it was difficult to move. With the introduction of electronic money and self-checkout, it seems like it will become even more popular.

I went to the Elm fresh market.

What is it about the Elm Fresh Market that attracts so many people from inside and outside of Aomori Prefecture? I actually went there to check it out!

I arrived around 3pm on a holiday, and the parking lot was so full that I thought it was an event. There are guides, but they can't tell you where to find a vacant spot, so you have to keep walking around looking for a vacant spot...The specialty store street parking lot is more crowded, so we recommend the parking lot on the Fresh Market side. . By the way, it's crowded from 2pm to 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, so if you don't like crowds, it's best to go in the morning or after the evening.

Inside the fresh market

Elm's Fresh Market was renovated for the first time in 10 years in the spring of 2024, and the interior was bright and equipped with self-checkout and electronic money. Compared to how crowded the parking lot was, there were fewer customers at the fresh market, but the specialty store area where clothing and miscellaneous goods were sold was bustling with people.

Elm's Fresh Market has delicatessens lined up on the left as soon as you enter. There is a wide selection of aemono dishes, grilled fish, sushi, and more made with local ingredients. As soon as the delicatessen section ends, a lot of seafood is lined up in the sales floor, and all of them look fresh and delicious!

On this day, flatfish and filefish were lined up. As you can see from the photo, the price is too low...! Nameta flounder from Hokkaido is sold for 58 yen per 100g, and there are few supermarkets where you can buy domestically produced flounder at such an exceptional price. I bought one filefish that you can see in the back for 480 yen, and it was a great deal because it had a lot of liver in it.

This shop ``Uogashi Kasahou'' , and in addition to Elm, it is also located in THREE, a commercial facility that opened in Aomori City this year.

The caps are rich in shellfish, and are displayed peeled off as shown in the photo. Recommended for those who want to eat oysters but can't peel them themselves or don't know how to peel them. Since the weather was nice that day, they also sold BBQ sets that included shrimp, oysters, and turban shells.

They also sold Honbinosu shellfish, which are rarely seen in Aomori Prefecture. These shellfish are alive, and if you ask the Kasahou staff, they will cut them up for sashimi. Kasahou prepares the fish for a variety of purposes, including grated two or three pieces, for sashimi, and for frying. It may take some time if it's crowded, but they'll do it for free, so even people who can't handle fish can buy with confidence.

Once you pass the Kasahou department, you will see Yamamoto Suisan in the back. This is a fish shop whose main store is near Elm, and they also have stores in Aomori City.

What you should buy at Yamamoto Suisan is the sashimi. The colorful sashimi is neatly arranged, and just looking at it will leave you mesmerized. It's an assortment of sashimi, but the price is the same, but the contents are slightly different, so it's fun to choose the one that includes your favorite fish. At the back of this department, sashimi was sold with a fence, and large fatty tuna and medium fatty tuna were lined up in a row.

In addition to sashimi, there are lots of fresh fish! Occasionally, octopus or shark heads are sold, or whole conger eels are sold, and rare fish are also sold, so many customers visit during the tourist season.

There were also many spiny crabs on sale, which are said to have a better taste than hairy crabs. Even if you don't know how to eat it, just ask the staff and they will gently teach you how to prepare it and recommend how to eat it. Also, Yamamoto Suisan also pre-processes the fish for free, so please try purchasing at your favorite store.
