[Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture] Let's release sky lanterns at "Lights of the Heart," an event where countless lights dance in the air!

The Ishinomaki Chamber of Commerce and Industry Youth Division and local youth economic organizations are taking the lead in holding the "Lights of the Heart" event, where Lumiem Sky Lanterns will be flown as a welcoming fire on August 11th, the seven-year and five-month anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, in memory of those who lost their lives in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and with the strong desire to accurately convey the story of this great disaster to future generations and to prevent future generations from becoming victims

What are sky lanterns?

Sky lanterns, also known as khom loi or sky lanterns, are a type of hot air balloon launched at festivals in Thailand and China. Their soft, warm light symbolizes wisdom, and they are traditionally given as offerings to guide people to the right path. Sky lanterns originate 770 years ago, and are said to have been used as a means of communication at the time. Today, they have become an established folk custom of praying for good health, with messages written on them and sent to the heavens. Sky lanterns are gradually becoming more well-known in Japan, thanks to their appearance in a key scene in the Disney film "Tangled."

The material used in this project, Lumiem, is a phosphorescent material that means "light and poetry" in French. It is an environmentally friendly material that "returns to nature" as it is transformed into carbon dioxide and water by the action of bacteria, and can be released into the sky. For these reasons, it was also used at the Tohoku Earthquake Memorial Ceremony held in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture in March 2015
