Uesugi Kagekatsu , the first lord of the Yonezawa domain and one of the five elders of the Toyotomi government, was born on November 27, 1551 (January 8, 1556) as the second son of Nagao Masakage, head of the Ueda Nagao family, in the castle town of Sakado in Ueda-sho, Uonuma County, Echigo Province (present-day Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture).He was adopted by his uncle, Uesugi Kenshin , and changed his name to Uesugi Kagekatsu.

March 20, 1623 (April 19, 1623) at the age of 69. He was buried at Hoon-ji Temple, the family temple of the Uesugi family, in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture.
