What kind of shrine is Namekawa Shrine?

Namekawa Shrine has a long history, dating back to the time of Emperor Keiko (late 1st century onwards).
Yamato Takeru, a hero recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, is said to have traveled around Japan exorcising various disasters. When he visited Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, he described the smoothness of the riverbed, which is said to be the origin of the name "Namekawa." It is said that the shrine began when people who admired Yamato Takeru enshrined him as Namekawa-no-Okami.
The enshrined deities of Namekawa Shrine are as follows:
- Emperor Yamato Takeru
- Hondawake no Mikoto
- Sugawara no Michizane
- The spirit of Taira no Kagemasa
The main deity is Yamato Takeru, the god of protection from evil. Homudawake no Mikoto is a god affectionately known as Hachiman. Taira no Kagesada is said to have fought bravely without fear even after being shot in the eye with a bow and arrow. Sugawara no Michizane is the god of learning affectionately known as Tenjin.
The four deities enshrined here are gods who sincerely fulfilled their respective missions and duties. Therefore,Namerikawa Shrineis considered to be home to the guardian deities of "work." This work isn't limited to business in the conventional sense; it encompasses the responsibilities necessary for one's current life, such as academics, household chores, and ensuring children's healthy play. For this reason, some of the votive tablets at Namerikawa Shrine are dedicated to "victory prayers," wishing for success in one's work.
,after prayers for Shichi-Go-San and other celebrations, they perform the "Go Board Ceremony," modeled after traditional imperial rituals. This ceremony prays for the healthy growth, independence, and good fortune of children. It will surely be a memorable time for both the children and their families.
