Historic Midorigaoka Park in Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture

Midorigaoka Park is the only park in Fukushima Prefecture to be selected as one of the " Top 100 Urban Parks in Japan ." The selection project was organized in 1989 by the Japan Park and Greenery Association and the Green Civilization Society, and was supported by the Ministry of Construction at the time. Midorigaoka Park was selected as one of the top 100 parks out of 653 parks that were entered.

Midorigaoka Park has a long history, dating back to the Taisho era. It started when Mt. Myoken was opened as a park for local residents to relax in. Later, Mt. Atago, the castle of the Nikaido clan, the lords of Sukagawa Castle, was included in the park, and it has long been a beloved spot for local residents

Sukagawa City began full-scale development of the park as an urban park in 1959. This large-scale development project also included surrounding areas such as Mt. Goro and the former samurai residences in the area. The park currently covers an area of ​​approximately 29.9 hectares, which is equivalent to about six Tokyo Domes. The park is also known as the venue for the famous " Taimatsu Akashi " traditional event in Sukagawa City, and the Sukagawa City Museum is located within the park.

Midorigaoka Park, a green space centered around approximately 1,800 red pines, has signed a Park-PFI agreement with a private company as a new initiative in the Reiwa era. Park-PFI is a system in which private businesses set up commercial facilities within parks owned and operated by the government, and are responsible for the maintenance, renovation, and operation of the park's environment. Currently, a cafe and hot spring facility are operated by a private company within Midorigaoka Park based on this agreement

Here is a report on my experience strolling through Midorigaoka Park

One of Midorigaoka Park's features is its large number of parking spaces . There are eight parking spaces within the park, with a total of approximately 350 spaces available, but because the park is so large, we recommend choosing a parking spot that suits your destination.

I started my walk from the parking lot near the main gate. This is the closest parking lot to the area lined with cafes, restaurants, and hot springs. The grassy area also has a covered stage where events can be held

The paved asphalt garden paths are wide and easy to walk on, and with trees lining both sides, it feels as if you are bathing in a shower of greenery

The tree's rugged, sturdy bark gives it an imposing appearance, and if you happen to look down at your feet, you may find delicate flowers quietly blooming

There is a beautiful pond in the park, and the picturesque waterside scenery is beautiful in every season

If you walk further, you will come across flower beds and enjoy discovering things like lilies of the valley blooming quietly as you stroll

After crossing the bridge over the road, you will arrive at the square where the Torch Accord will be held

From the spacious hill, you can look down on the cityscape of Sukagawa City

There are various walking paths within the park that make use of the natural topography. The park is characterized by the diverse scenery that can be enjoyed within a single park, including areas with waterside areas that weave through the forest, challenging courses with ups and downs, and areas where wetland plants grow naturally. This means that you can enjoy new discoveries every time you visit

Also, close to the commercial area is a large playground complex where children can play to their heart's content. They're sure to have a blast with things like secret base-like ladders and Tarzan ropes. The playful design, featuring trees and insects, is full of Sukagawa City spirit
