Hinatsu
Confectionery Shop Hinatsu

If you walk west along Prefectural Route 129, you will come across an area packed with long-established Japanese confectionery shops. This time, I stopped by two of them.

The first place we visited was "Okashidokoro Hinatsu," a famous confectionery shop that produces many hit sweets, including Nihonmatsu Yokan. The interior of the shop is bright and friendly. The spacious display window is packed with a variety of intriguing sweets. You can enjoy shopping while being soothed by the warm hospitality of the staff.

Senshintei
Senshintei Ohuku

purchased one of their specialty sweets, ." It is a monaka (bean-wrapped) sweet filled with bean paste, and comes in two varieties: white bean paste made with ohuku beans and red bean paste made with red bean paste. Ohuku beans are large white kidney beans. They are characterized by their pure white color and soft texture. Senshintei apparently uses an abundance of high-quality ohuku beans.

When you take a bite, you'll be surprised by the delicate texture of the mochi, which feels like layers of thin silk. Inside is a generous amount of white bean paste. The white bean paste, which is spread all over the corners, is sticky yet melts in your mouth, and the plump sweetness of the ohuku beans spreads throughout the mouth. It's filling, yet you won't tire of eating it . It's a flavor that goes perfectly with a bit of bitter tea.

The store also sells castella cakes cut into pieces for gifts, which can be bought at home at a bargain price . Finding unexpected bargains is a special privilege only available to those who visit the area.

Shiho Kanman
Shiho Kanman

I bought traditional "Shiogama," dried confectionery mixed with perilla leaves .

The origins of this confection go back over 300 years. It is said to have been developed after the Niwa clan, lords of the Nihonmatsu domain, ordered them to "make something that can surpass the famous Shiogama confection of the Date domain (Sendai)." Shihokanman is a dried confectionery that is soft and has a simple yet elegant taste. You will feel the romance of history in this confectionery that has been passed down just as it was back then.

The photo shows a small pack of two. You can choose the size depending on how much you want to eat, which shows how thoughtful the product is.
