table of contents
Akita is a place where the clear, blue water surface and the majestic nature of the mountains reflected in it captivate viewers. Dakigaeri Valley is a tourist attraction known only to those in the know. It is also known as a spot with beautiful autumn leaves. It can be said that it is the perfect place for the coming season.
Origin of Dakigaeri Valley
Dakigaeri Valley is an interesting name. There are various theories about its origin. The most likely theory is that when people passed each other, the path was so narrow that they had to hug each other and turn their bodies around. Some of you may be worried about going after hearing this. But it's okay. Nowadays, the roads are well maintained, and you can pass each other with plenty of time without having to hug each other.
The Dakigaeri Valley promenade is an abandoned railroad track.
This well-maintained promenade is also attracting the attention of railway enthusiasts. This is because this is the ruins of the Seihonai Forest Tramway. This track was created to transport Akita cedar, which is known as one of Japan's three most beautiful forests. It ran from Natsuse to Jindai Station on the National Railways Life Insurance Line (currently JR Tazawako Line). As you walk along the promenade, imagining how the railroad used to run, you can feel the smell of eternity.
Dakigaeri Shrine is also a famous place
At the entrance to Dakigaeri Valley, there is Dakigaeri Shrine. The origin of the name of Dakigaeri Shrine is different from that of Dakigaeri Valley. ``Minamoto no Yoshiie'' wished for the flow of the river to be calm because he was going to advance through the ``Tamagawa'' in battle. He enshrined a Buddhist statue and prayed. Yoshiie, who had won the battle, returned safely with the Buddha in his pocket. Because of this, it was said to be a shrine that brings back memories. This kind of tradition is said to be the origin of Dakigaeri Shrine. Even though it is the same Dakigae, it is refreshing to see that the origins of the tradition are different between the valley and the shrine.
God's Rock Bridge
After walking along the Dakigaeri Valley promenade for a while, you will see a beautiful red suspension bridge. This is God's Rock Bridge. This suspension bridge is the oldest suspension bridge in Akita Prefecture. It was completed in 1926. As a symbol of the Dakigaeri Valley, it has been showing off its beautiful appearance to people more than ever before. It is said that the name of the bridge was taken from one character each from the former Jindai Village and the former Shiraiwa Village. The Kami-no-iwa Bridge with the Dakigaeri Valley in the background looks like a painting. The view of the valley from the bridge is also said to be spectacular.
