[Yanaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture] What is “Awamanju” recommended by locals? Where can I buy it?

When it comes to souvenir sweets from Fukushima, ``Mamadoru'' and ``thin skin manju'' are famous. However, this time we would like to introduce ``Awamanju''

The appeal of Awamanju is its texture. The use of sticky rice and millet creates a unique texture. The texture becomes more pronounced the fresher it is steamed, making it an addictive and must-have dish.

This time, I would like to tell you about the charm of Awamanju. We will also introduce shopping spots, so please use this as a reference when sightseeing in Fukushima.

What kind of sweet is Awamanju?

Awamanju is a Japanese sweet filled with strained red bean paste wrapped in a skin made from millet and glutinous rice.

"Millet" is a plant belonging to the Poaceae family and is counted as one of the five grains. Like rice, there are two varieties: uruchi and mochi.Uruchi has a smooth and chewy texture when cooked, while mochi has a thick, slightly spicy aroma when cooked.

Millet, along with barnyard millet, which is also a five-grain, has a history of being eaten as a staple food since ancient times. However, in modern times, rice became the main ingredient at the table, and consumption decreased significantly. Nowadays, millet is once again attracting attention as a highly nutritious food. Millet is rich in dietary fiber and also contains iron. As people become more health-conscious, they are being reconsidered as grains that can be easily consumed.

Awamanju is characterized by its unique skin made from millet. It is made from a mixture of millet and sticky rice that is dyed a bright yellow color inspired by the color of millet seeds. The smooth, chewy texture of the glutinous rice and the bubble-like texture of the millet grains combine within the thin skin to create a truly enjoyable texture.

The inside of the skin is filled with carefully kneaded bean paste. It's not too sweet and melts smoothly in your mouth. It's wrapped in luxurious bean paste, so you'll be very satisfied with just one. However, it's strange because I can't help but reach for one more thing because of the texture.

The fresher it is steamed, the more chewy it will be, so if you have the chance, you should try it freshly made.
