[Miyagi] Speaking of Sendai! Sankaku Aburaage(triangle fried tofu) and Jogesan that locals also love

Miyagi Prefecture's delicatessen dishes, such as bamboo shoots and beef tongue, are delicious, but I have to say that they are not great as souvenirs.

If you want to give something a little different, why not choose the "Joge Sankaku Aburaage(triangle fried tofu)'' from Jogesan?

The official name of Jogesan is Saihoji Temple .

Mt. Jijiri is known as the home of the Heike fugitives. The official name is Saihoji TempleHowever, it is not often called by its official name, and is generallyJoge Nyorai It is called.

Seihozan Saihoji Temple

What is the origin of the name “Joge”?

In the legend of the Heike fugitives that remains in this area, Taira no Sadayoshi, the governor of Higo, was the center of gravity for Lord Taira no Shigemori, and he fought in the final battle of the Genpei War in 1185."Battle of Dannoura"After being defeated, he escaped the subjugation and ended up in the Tohoku region.

So Sadayoshichanged the kanji of own name 貞能 to 定義. There are two ways to read this, one of which is Joge.He was entrusted with the name of Lord Shigemori. The statue of Amida Nyorai was called Joge Nyorai.
This is the reason why it is called Jogesan and Joge Nyorai.

By the way, it seems that the correct way to read 定義山 is "Jōge" rather than "Jōgi"
This can be seen from the fact that the small letters of the address of Mt. Gokuraku Saihoji Temple on Jogesan are also written as "upper and lower" and read as "joge" and "JOGE" is also written on the map created by the Occupation Forces after the war.

However, the currently popular reading is "jogi", so it is written as "jogi" in government offices, the tourism industry, and on information signs.
People living in Sendai have called it "joge" for a long time, so don't get confused.
