The first in Japan to be connected to space: the Mizusawa Campus of the National Astronomical Observatory (Iwate Prefecture)

Although the name sounds like a university, the Mizusawa Campus of the National Astronomical Observatory is actually an observatory of the National Astronomical Observatory. Its predecessor was the oldest surviving "latitude observatory" of the National Astronomical Observatory, opened in 1899 (Meiji 32).
