Sensoji Temple

[Tokyo] Sensoji Temple, one of Japan's most famous tourist destinations

Sensoji Temple is one of the largest temples in Tokyo, and has long been known as the Kannon of Asakusa.
It is one of the oldest temples in Tokyo, and has been revered as a presence that watches over the development of the surrounding area over time.
During the reign of Emperor Suiko, a statue of Kannon was discovered in a nearby river. After this statue of Kannon came to be worshiped as the principal image, it began to prosper greatly.

It was during the Edo period that Sensoji Temple grew into a great temple, and was highly revered by the common people of Edo.
At the same time, it was highly trusted by the Tokugawa shogunate, and its status as a temple symbolizing the downtown area was established.
Various festivals were held during the Edo period, but the Hozuki market remains as an event that is still relevant today.

The imposing Kaminarimon gate on the south side is one of the symbolic buildings of Sensoji Temple.
A huge lantern is hung in the center of the building, and the building is also characterized by its unique beauty.
Kaminarimon was destroyed in a fire at the end of the Edo period and was not rebuilt for a long time, but it was restored after the war and regained its splendid appearance.
Nowadays, it is a popular building among foreign tourists, and is also known to be a good representation of the Edo period style.

After passing through Kaminarimon, you will see a long shopping street in front of the gate.
This shopping street is called Nakamise and has been popular since ancient times. The current Nakamise was rebuilt after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and like Kaminarimon, it has a unique atmosphere. There are many shops selling traditional souvenirs in Nakamise, and there is no shortage of tourists throughout the season.

As you pass through Nakamise, you will see the large main hall, which was rebuilt after the war.
The main hall boasts a magnificent scale, with beautiful tiled roof colors and curves, and the contrast with the surrounding five-storied pagoda and Tokyo Sky Tree is stunning.
It gets very crowded during the New Year's shrine visit, but even on weekends there are many tourists.
Sensoji's large temple complex takes on a different appearance at night when it is lit up, creating a fantastic night view that you can enjoy.
