Sensoji Temple

[Tokyo] Sensoji Temple, one of Japan's most famous tourist destinations

Senso-ji Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in Tokyo, and has long been affectionately known as "Asakusa's Kannon." It
is one of the oldest temples in Tokyo and has been revered as a guardian presence watching over the development of the surrounding area throughout history.
During the reign of Empress Suiko, a statue of Kannon was discovered in a nearby river. After this statue became the principal image of worship, the temple prospered greatly.

Senso-ji Temple grew into a grand temple complex during the Edo period and was deeply revered by the common people of Edo.
At the same time, it enjoyed the strong trust of the Tokugawa shogunate, establishing its position as a symbolic temple of downtown Tokyo.
While various festivals were held during the Edo period, the Chinese lantern plant market remains a tradition that continues to this day.

Standing majestically on the south side, the Kaminarimon Gate is one of Senso-ji Temple's symbolic buildings.
A giant lantern hangs from its center, and the building's unique aesthetic is a distinctive feature.
After being destroyed by fire during the late Edo period, the Kaminarimon Gate remained unrebuilt for a long time, but it was restored after World War II, regaining its magnificent form.
Today, it's a popular landmark for foreign tourists, known for its excellent representation of Edo-period atmosphere.

Passing through Kaminarimon Gate, you'll see a long shopping street in front of the gate. This shopping street is called Nakamise and has been a beloved spot for centuries.
The current Nakamise was rebuilt after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and, like Kaminarimon Gate, has a unique atmosphere. Nakamise is home to many shops selling traditional souvenirs and is always bustling with tourists throughout the year.

As you pass through Nakamise Street, you'll see the large main hall, which was rebuilt after the war.
The magnificent main hall boasts beautiful colors and curves on its tiled roof, and its contrast with the surrounding five-story pagoda and Tokyo Skytree is stunning. It
gets extremely crowded during the New Year's pilgrimage season, but it's also a popular tourist spot on regular weekends.
The grand complex of Senso-ji Temple transforms into a different appearance when illuminated at night, offering a fantastical night view to enjoy.
