Tokyo's adult bar district where you can be intoxicated by the temptations of the back alleys

For those who usually drink at izakaya bars in front of the station, we recommend the ``Bar Street'', which has a deep atmosphere. Tokyo is dotted with numerous bar districts, which are bustling with people every night enjoying drinks, delicious food, and the bar district atmosphere. This time, we will introduce a selection of Tokyo's deep bar districts.

Shinjuku Golden Gai (Shinjuku Ward)

Shinjuku Golden Gai is one of the most well-known areas in Tokyo, which has many bar districts. Originally it was an entertainment district called the Blue Line District, but now there are around 200 restaurants.

Since the Showa era, this area has been frequented by cultural figures such as editors and actors, and is also recognized as a source of subculture. By the way, please note that the alleys of Shinjuku Golden Gai are private property, so taking photos without permission is prohibited, except from on public roads near the Hanazono Police Box.

Harmonica Alley (Musashino City)

Harmonica Yokocho, located at the north exit of Kichijoji Station, is a bar district consisting of five areas: Noren Koji, Chuo Dori, Showakai Dori, Nakamise Dori, and Asahi Dori. Harmonica Alley's roots lie in the black market that arose after the war, and as a result of that, the area is packed with small shops.

Each of the five streets has its own characteristics, and it's a good idea to start by exploring Chuo-dori, which is home to Harmonica Kitchen, which is said to be a symbol of Harmonica Yokocho, and Noren-koji, where more shops open at night.

Shinjuku West Exit Shopping District (Shinjuku Ward)

The last place we will introduce is Shinjuku West Exit Shopping Street, which operates in Nishi-Shinjuku. This shopping street is affectionately known as Omoide Yokocho and has its roots in the postwar black market. The majority of the shops operating here are yakitori restaurants and popular pubs, hence the name Yakitori Yokocho.

In the Showa era, there were about 300 stores, but some of them were forced to leave because they were illegally occupying the land, and now the number has settled down to about one-third. It's easily accessible from the office district of Shinjuku, so you can feel free to stop by on your way home from work.
