The Domain School Chi Dokan and the Todo Museum are historical drama spots in the Shonai region! [Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture]

Chidokan is the only surviving domain school in the Tohoku region, where students could learn the same level of education as today's elementary school through graduate school.

The buildings on the premises are open to the public. Audio guides are available and easy to understand, so you can enjoy the place even if you have no prior knowledge

This is a valuable place where you can get a glimpse of history and discover what kind of education was provided in Tsuruoka during the Edo period

Also, near Chidokan is the Chido Museum, which houses many buildings that are essential to the history of Tsuruoka. Today, we will introduce the historic domain school, Chidokan, and the Chido Museum, where valuable buildings are on display

The roots of the Shonai Domain School, Chidokan

Promoting education that develops natural talent

Chidokan was founded in 1805 (Bunka 2) by Lord Tadanori, the ninth feudal lord of the Sakai clan. He placed great importance on the Sorai school of thought, and his educational motto was to nurture natural talent

Sorai-gaku is an unfamiliar term. It is a discipline that aims to study the ancient Chinese language used in the interpretation of classic texts. By doing so, it aims to properly grasp the meaning of the classic texts.

Natural talent refers to an individual's strengths and weaknesses. Since people are born with different talents, the focus is on developing their strengths

Reclaiming the lost part of the samurai

At the time, the Shonai domain's samurai were frivolous and often behaved in ways that deviated from the duties of a samurai. This is where the ninth head of the Sakai family, Tadanori Sakai, stepped in and established a school to correct the samurai's mindset

The desire behind the establishment of the domain schools was to help the samurai regain their sense of warriorhood and use that to rebuild the domain's government

The name Chidokan comes from the Analects of Confucius

The name Chidokan comes from "A gentleman learns and follows the path."

Today, Chidokan is the only remaining domain school building in the Tohoku region, and was designated a national historic site in 1951. Even today, the building hosts events such as Confucius meetings and classical reading classes for children. The Chidokan education that values natural talent is still alive and well

The Shonai domain where the Chidokan is located is also known as the setting for the original story of the film "Samurai's Minute" ("Blind Sword Echo Return" by Fujisawa Shuhei), which became a hot topic and starred Kimura Takuya. It is a mecca for fans of the original story. Chidokan in particular has realistically retained the atmosphere of the past, which resonates with the hearts of those who visit

A large, beautiful space chosen as a filming location

The 7,000 square meter site is home to the mausoleum, lecture hall, west gate, and east gate. The inside of the lecture hall remains exactly as it was in the past. With the carefully polished floor and sunlight filtering through the shoji screens, you can almost hear the voices of samurai

The front gate of the Shonai Domain School, Chidokan
The front gate of the Shonai Domain School, Chidokan

Due to its atmospheric appearance, it is often used as a filming location for movies, such as "After the Flowers" and "Semi Shigure," both based on the novels of the Naoki Prize-winning author Fujisawa Shuhei, and "Thirteen Assassins," based on the novel of Ikegami Kaneo

The largest number of valuable documents

Among all the domain schools, Todokan has a particularly large number of historical documents. Shonai is famous as the only domain that survived the Boshin War, and documents from that time are also available

There are also interesting historical documents that deepen his relationship with Saigo Takamori after the war

The Todo Museum is also full of Tsuruoka's charms

Located on the west side of Tsuruoka Park, close to Todokan, is the Todo Museum, which consists of several historical buildings, including one designated as an Important Cultural Property by the national government

The Todo Museum was also used as a filming location for the TV drama "Semi Shigure," making it an essential spot for learning about Tsuruoka's history

Historic buildings on the site

The following are some of the representative buildings in the museum:

• Former Nishitagawa County Office
• Former Tsuruoka Police Station Building
• Shonai Domain Lord's Retirement Palace
• Sakai Family Garden
• Multi-story houses in Tamugimata

The symbol of the Todo Museum: the former Nishitagawa County Office

The former Nishitagawa County Office is a particularly symbolic presence at the Todo Museum. Tsuruoka was known as Nishitagawa County during the Meiji period. This building was constructed as the county office at that time

Todo Museum Former Nishitagawa County Office
Todo Museum Former Nishitagawa County Office

It features a sophisticated Western-style exterior, but incorporates some Japanese elements in places. For this reason, some people call it pseudo-Western architecture

Of course, you can go inside. It is a two-story building, and the interior is also Western-style. Archaeological materials are displayed on the first floor, and historical materials related to Meiji culture are displayed on the second floor. The building's distinctive feature is the hanging staircase

The structure without supports underneath the stairs was particularly common in Renaissance architecture. The building incorporates Meiji-era techniques and rare Western-style methods (in Japan), and has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan

Feel the peace and quiet of matcha at Shonai Domain Lord's Inn

It was built in 1863 as a retirement home for Sakai Tadaharu, the 11th lord of the Shonai domain. Today, only the entrance hall and inner parlor remain. From the inner parlor, you can enjoy a cup of matcha while admiring the scenic Sakai family garden, a nationally designated place of scenic beauty

You can feel the relaxed life of Mr. Sakai in retirement. Matcha is available for a limited time only

• [Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture] Pensee's sweets workshop is now available! I went to Fromage Hakotsuka!

[Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture] Pensee's sweets workshop is now available! I went to Fromage Hakotsuka!

Hakotsuka, Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture.
A special Western confectionery store has opened near a quiet residential area on Aijima.

Fromage Hakatsuka is a Western confectionery workshop that was born in Miyagi with the idea of ``bringing special smiles to every day smiles'' and was born to help Pensees, a bakery shop in Miyagi, create smiles in a variety of everyday situations.
What kind of story will be woven there?

This time, I would like to introduce Fromage Hakotsuka.

It’s not just about “buying” and “eating”! What are the many experiences you can have at Fromage Hakatsuka?

Fromage Hakotsuka offers a number of special experiences that cannot be found at ordinary pastry shops.

The experiences you can have at a regular Western confectionery shop include buying wonderful baked goods and cakes and eating them on the spot.
Of course, fromage Hacoduka also sells baked goods and cakes, and the attached cafe, Hacoduka, also serves sweets and drinks.
So, what kind of special experience can you offer that you can't get at a regular Western confectionery store?

First in the prefecture! “Hakoduka LABO” is an experience workshop where you can make cakes.

When it comes to jobs that girls dream of in the future and are proud of their deep-rooted strength, they are ``cake shop'' and ``pastry chef.''
At Fromage Hakozuka, that dream can come true!

That corner is Hakoduka Labo.
This is an experience workshop where you can make a one-of-a-kind cake in the world while thinking about someone.

The cake you make is the only one in the world that only you can make.
I would be happiest if I could give someone a cake that I put a lot of love into and share it with them.

Children's chef's coats can be rented for free, and chef's hats are free!
This attraction is recommended for children who have dreams of becoming a pastry chef!

Please note that reservations are required, with one group per day on weekdays and two groups per day on weekends and holidays.

A wonderful day spent on the terrace! Cherry blossoms are in full bloom in spring! ?

The inside of the store is nice, but on a nice day, why not enjoy some tea on the terrace?
There is also terrace seating at the back of Cafe Hakoduka.
Since it is located near a quiet residential area, the atmosphere on the terrace is also special.
Enjoying chatting with family, friends, and lovers while being surrounded by the pleasant air and sunshine is the ultimate luxury!

In spring, the sunflower cherry blossoms in Hakotsuka are in full bloom, so we recommend relaxing on the terrace while watching the cherry blossoms!

By the way, the coffee served at Cafe Hakoduka is made using a special method called light siphon.
The fantastic light from the halogen lamps used to boil water will make you fall in love with it just by looking at it!

I actually tried it!

Well, Fromage Hakatsuka offers many wonderful experiences, but what does it actually taste like?
If the Western sweets don't taste good, your special day will be ruined!
So, from now on, I will actually try out Fromage Hakotsuka's Western sweets and review my impressions!

The cream puff has a moist texture! The flavor of the eggs is rich and addictive!

cream puff

First, there were the cream puffs sold in the store.
As it is called "The Cream Puff", the taste is simply delicious.

The choux pastry has a moist and delicate texture.
I was able to fully enjoy the taste of the dough itself without using the recently trendy crispy cookie dough.

On the other hand, cream has a light taste with less sweetness.
It brings out the sweetness of the egg-flavored choux pastry.
An exquisite harmony of choux pastry and cream.
Once you try it, you might become addicted!

Let's smile with the cheese cookie sandwich "Egao no Oka"!

Egao no Oka

From the sweets corner, we introduce the cheese cookie sandwich "Egao no Oka"!
This is a cookie sandwich with cheese in between.

The cheese layer is thick and the overall texture is soft.
Although it is called a cookie sandwich, the key is to enjoy the softness and volume rather than focusing on crispiness.

Most of these sweets are sweet, but the appeal of Egao no Oka is the saltyness of the cheese.
The modest sweetness is complemented by a high level of saltiness, so no matter how many times you eat it, you won't get tired of it.
The secret to never getting tired of it is that it uses a unique cheese.

It was the perfect sweet to serve when you have guests over!

Nice to meet you too, Pense!

There is also a pensée on the premises of Fromage Hakotsuka.
After eating delicious bread at Pensee, you can have sweets for dessert, or you can stuff your mouth with bread on the way home after buying baked goods as a souvenir for a loved one.You can enjoy bread and sweets in your own way. It would be great if you could enjoy both!

• Fun lunch tour! Tokyo Station Hotel

Fun lunch tour! Tokyo Station Hotel

Tokyo Station Hotel guest rooms are on the 2nd to 4th floors

The Tokyo Station Hotel is a historic hotel that has been integrated into the red brick building of Tokyo Station and has been in operation since the year after Tokyo Station opened. Currently, a day tour that includes a tour of the Tokyo Station Hotel and lunch is secretly popular! I decided to take part!

Tour the Tokyo Station Hotel!

The guest room corridor is a gallery

The red brick building of Tokyo Station was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2003. Since 2006, restoration of the original exterior and earthquake reinforcement work has been carried out, and the station has reopened for business on October 3, 2012. At the new Tokyo Station Hotel, the guest room corridors have been turned into a gallery that shows the station's history

Paintings and photographs show the history of the facility from its opening
The timetable for Seicho Matsumoto's "Point and Line" is also on display

The former Tokyo Station Hotel is also known for being the place where great Showa-era writers such as Yasunari Kawabata and Seicho Matsumoto stayed to write. To commemorate this, the exhibits include a framed double-page spread of the first installment of the magazine series "Dot and Line," as well as a framed timetable. If you join the tour, hotel staff will guide you to the guest room floors that are off-limits to guests

Inside the Cathedral Dome at the South Exit of Tokyo Station

Go straight from the guest room floor on the 3rd floor and you will be guided to the Cathedral Dome on the south side. On the other side of the window is the South Exit Hall of Tokyo Station. On the wall, there is a notice explaining the restoration of the dome's ceiling and wall decorations. Here, the hotel staff will give you a detailed explanation. Of course, they will also answer your questions patiently

South Exit Hall from the 3rd floor of the South Exit Cathedral

Looking down from the window, you can see the South Exit Hall. There is a walkway with handrails around the door opposite on the 3rd floor, but this is for maintenance purposes and is not used by hotel staff. There are also guest rooms on the 3rd floor of the Cathedral Dome that overlook the South Exit

The best room! Imperial Suite

The guest rooms are decorated in yellow

After touring the Cathedral Dome at the south exit, we next took a look at the guest rooms. Only rooms that are not occupied that day can be visited, but this time we were shown the only special room, the Imperial Suite. The living room in this room is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate 16 people, with a sofa, table, and desk

Beyond the window is Gyoko-dori Street

The street visible from the living room window is Gyoko-dori, which stretches towards the Imperial Palace. The Imperial Suite is located exactly in the middle of Tokyo Station. The buildings on either side are Shin-Maru Building on the left and Maru Building on the right. Directly below is the driveway where the Emperor passes when he uses Tokyo Station

Spacious bedroom

The bedroom is spacious. The bed is king-size, and an LCD TV is installed on the wall opposite the bed. The bathroom is adjacent to the bedroom. There is also a minibar. If you're wondering about the room rate, it is said to be around 800,000 yen per night, excluding consumption tax, service charge, and accommodation tax. Incidentally, Tokyo Station Hotel is highly rated overseas, and in 2018 it received a four-star rating for the third consecutive year in the American Forbes Travel Guide

The tour ends with lunch in the atrium!

It's hard to believe that this was once an attic

After touring the Cathedral Dome and the guest rooms, we had lunch at the Atrium, a restaurant exclusively for guests. Originally an attic in the center of the station building, it was renovated during restoration work that began in 2006. The red bricks on the left wall are from the pre-war Tokyo Station Hotel. The high ceilings and abundant natural light make it very relaxing

Atrium is a restaurant exclusively for hotel guests

The Atrium is originally the venue for the breakfast buffet. In front of it is the space where the lunch buffet dishes are laid out. As there are many guests from overseas, the names and descriptions of the dishes are posted in English next to the food. Incidentally, the tour lunch served here is basically a French course meal. Depending on the tour, there are lunches with beef stew as the main dish

How was it?

Several travel agencies offer tours of the Tokyo Station Hotel for a limited time. The Tokyo Station Hotel also offers the "Atrium Lunch Plan" several times a month. For more details, please see the "Atrium" page on the hotel's official website. You're sure to enjoy something out of the ordinary!

• [Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture] Stimulate your five senses at the "Sensory Museum"! Experience unknown sensations in a mysterious space

[Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture] Stimulate your five senses at the "Sensory Museum"! Experience unknown sensations in a mysterious space

The "Sensation Museum" is located in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. It is a museum with the five senses as its main theme: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste

The museum features exhibits by artists from a variety of industries that appeal to the five senses, allowing visitors to feel rather than think, as art appreciation should be

Many of the exhibits are not difficult to think about, but rather have an intuitive impact, making them popular with a wide range of people, from children to adults

This time, we will introduce the charm of this sensory museum

The Senses Museum is made up of three areas

The museum is made up of three areas: the "Dialogue Zone" (a space for physical sensations), the "Monologue Zone" (a space for meditation), and the "Traverse Zone" that connects these two areas

Dialogue Zone

In the dialogue zone, you can actually touch the pieces and get a sense of the maker's intentions and inspiration. There are three highlights, the first of which is the creative musical instrument corner

(1) Creative instruments

Here, creative musical instruments made from pipes, wood, and bamboo are on display. You can actually play the instruments by hitting them with your hands or plucking them with your fingers. Some of the instruments produce soothing sounds, such as birdsong and flowing water

There are several original instruments, some of which are over 3 meters tall. When playing an instrument, the tones of other people using original instruments blend together, creating unexpected harmonies. One of the attractions of this corner is the possibility of improvising original songs

(2) Circle 'n' Circle

Right next to the creative instruments is a large wheel-shaped piece called "Circle 'n' Circle," which was also created with an interesting concept

You can sit on your back in the center of the wheel, hold the handlebars with your hands, and place your feet on the pedals. As you move your arms and legs, you can draw with chalk on the wall next to the work

When you turn the handlebars or pedals, the chalk attached to the work moves nicely, allowing you to draw lines on the wall. Try your best to draw the best lines

(3) Space and Sound
The third highlight of the Dialogue Zone is "Space and Sound." You enter a pitch-black room and feel the space through sound. It is a three-dimensional virtual space.

It's very strange and fascinating that you can sense the shape of a space not through your eyes, but through sound

The sound plays according to the position of your hands. When you move your hands, the sound moves, and the space changes three-dimensionally. It's hard to explain in words. It's the kind of experience that's best experienced by anyone, so I recommend giving it a try

1-2. Monologue Zone

The Monologue Zone features exhibits that invite you into a world of meditation through sound, light, and scent

(1) Wall-Through
In the exhibit "Wall-Through," you can have the strange experience of passing through a black wall as if you were invisible, even though the mirror on the wall indicates that there is a black wall in the direction you are moving.

(2) Earth Garden
: The floors and stairs of the Earth Garden are covered with white gravel. If you sit on the stairs and look down, the city will appear to float in the air, using its shadows to create a different appearance as the sun sets.

(3) Water Garden
: In the Water Garden, the rippling water on the floor is reflected on the walls and ceiling, making you feel as if you are underwater. The scent of lotus flowers is pleasant and soothing.

(4) Fragrant Forest

The most popular exhibit in the Monologue Zone is "Forest of Fragrance," where 300,000 strands of paper hang from the ceiling

There are seven white pillars that resemble tree trunks, and if you put your face in a hole in each pillar, you can smell the scent of the local Iwadeyama mountain

Traverse Zone

The Traverse Zone is a space that connects the Dialogue Zone and the Monologue Zone

(1) Dark Forest
: The Dark Forest is a pitch black space with only a tiny amount of light.

This is an exhibit where you move along a handrail in the dark. The handrail is not straight, but rather curved. Occasionally, when you hold onto the handrail, you can see holes

There is an object inside the hole, and you can enjoy it not just by looking at it but by touching it

(2) Air Traverse
After passing through the dark forest, a dazzling light suddenly catches your eye. You enter the Air Traverse, a space surrounded by mirrors and glass on all sides. It is complex and intricate, and natural light pours in through the glass.

You will feel as if you are inside a kaleidoscope. Your image and that of those around you are reflected in the geometrically intricate mirrors, and the scenery changes as you move forward

Summary of the Senses Museum

The "Sensation Museum" offers a different artistic experience than ordinary museums or art galleries. In a tranquil space, you will be reminded of the five senses that you don't usually pay much attention to

There are many intuitively interesting exhibits that children can enjoy, but as the experience is a relaxed and detached experience from reality, many adults linger for a while, surrounded by mysterious sounds and scents

If you're feeling bored or used to your daily life, why not try stimulating your five senses at the Senses Museum and have a new experience? Even when you return to your normal life, the same scenery you've always seen may look different

• Stroll through Fukagawa's famous Kiyosumi Garden and enjoy Fukagawa gourmet food

Stroll through Fukagawa's famous Kiyosumi Garden and enjoy Fukagawa gourmet food

Kiyosumi Garden in Fukagawa began as Fukagawa Shinbokuen Garden, built by Mitsubishi Group founder Yataro Iwasaki as a place for employees to relax and receive guests. Take a stroll through this famous Meiji-era garden, which still retains its original appearance

The strolling garden built by Iwasaki Yataro

The entrance is a 4-minute walk from Kiyosumi Shirakawa Station

Kiyosumi Garden is a Tokyo Metropolitan Government designated Place of Scenic Beauty. It is said that this was once the site of the residence of Kinokuniya Bunzaemon, a wealthy merchant from the Edo period. Later, it became the secondary residence of the Sekijuku domain. Then
, in 1878 (Meiji 11), Iwasaki Yataro purchased 10,000 square meters of land in the surrounding area and opened Fukagawa Shinbokuen Garden. In 1924 (Taisho 13), the Iwasaki family donated Fukagawa Shinbokuen Garden to the city of Tokyo, and the current Kiyosumi Garden was born.

By the way, Kiyosumi Park, which is adjacent to Kiyosumi Garden, is also the former site of Fukagawa Shinbokuen. While Kiyosumi Garden requires an admission fee, Kiyosumi Park is open to the public free of charge

A strolling garden built over three generations of the Iwasaki family

Currently, Kiyosumi Garden is one of the most popular spots for foreign tourists. On the day we strolled around, tourists from various countries were enjoying the garden

Kiyosumi Garden is a strolling garden with a large pond called the Great Pond. The water for the Great Pond is currently rainwater, but in the past it drew water from the Sumida River. As a result, the water level of the pond would rise and fall with the high and low tides, causing the view to change

There are three islands in the pond: Nakanoshima, Wajima, and Matsushima, and on the water's edge is a tea-ceremony pavilion built in the sukiya style that juts out into the pond. The pavilion was originally built for reception by the Iwasaki family. It was renovated in 1985 and can now be used as a meeting place. There is a fee to use the pavilion. The pavilion was selected as a Tokyo Metropolitan Historical Building in 2005

Famous rocks along the coast

As you stroll around the Great Spring, enjoying the view around it, you'll come across large stones lined up like a path on the edge of the pond. This is called "Iso-Watari." It was created so that you can enjoy the scenery while feeling like you're walking on the pond

Ikoma stone placed on the waterside of the "Osen-sui" pond

The garden is filled with many garden stones of various sizes. Not only Ikoma stone, but also famous stones from all over the country, such as Bitchu granite, Sanuki granite, Iyo blue stone, and Kishu blue stone, are collected here. The paving stones, rock crossing stones, and stone bridges that are commonly placed here are all made from these famous stones. Incidentally, the stones decorating the garden were once collected from all over the country by the Iwasaki family

After a stroll through the famous garden, enjoy Fukagawa cuisine!

The area around the Fukagawa Edo Museum is the Fukagawa gourmet zone

After strolling through Kiyosumi Garden, why not have lunch on Fukagawa Meshi, a dish that has been eaten in Fukagawa since the Edo period? Just across the street from Kiyosumi Street, you'll find a collection of restaurants specializing in Fukagawa Meshi, a Fukagawa delicacy. Look for the large lantern bearing the words "Fukagawa Edo Museum." This area is lined with popular restaurants that often have long lines at lunchtime

"Clams in soy sauce" is a Fukagawa specialty

During the Edo period, Fukagawa was a fishing town, and clams were one of the things that were caught in abundance, making it a Fukagawa specialty. When there was an overabundance of clams, a processed food was made to keep them fresh and edible, and this is still a Fukagawa specialty today: clam tsukudani

Fukagawa-juku

Directly opposite the Fukagawa Edo Museum is Fukagawajuku, a restaurant specializing in Fukagawa meshi. It is one of the most popular restaurants. They serve two types of Fukagawa meshi.
One is Fukagawa meshi, which was eaten when Fukagawa was a fishing town, and is made by pouring chopped green onions and raw clams simmered in miso over hot rice.
The other is Fukagawa meshi, which is rice cooked with clams and was made for bento lunches around the time when the area around Fukagawa was reclaimed and the town changed from a fishing town to a town of carpenters.

Fukagawajuku Menu

There is a menu with photos on the sign at the entrance to Fukagawa-juku. Fortunately, there is also a menu where you can get half-size portions of both of the two types of Fukagawa-meshi. The restaurant's recommendation is the authentic Fukagawa-meshi that fishermen used to eat. Incidentally, Fukagawa-meshi, which is piping hot rice topped with bukkake, has also been selected as one of the 100 best local dishes by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

Eco Camp Michinoku can be enjoyed empty-handed

Normally, when you go camping, you prepare a lot of things like a tent, pegs, solid fuel, etc. However, at Eco Camp Michinoku, you can go empty-handed

You can rent everything from tents to cooking necessities. There are also rental package plans available, so you can rent at a great price

Site Type

There are two types of sites (places where you can set up your tent): auto camping sites and free tent sites

At an auto camping site, the location where you set up your tent is decided from the beginning. At a free tent site, you can pitch your tent wherever you like

Auto camping site

You can choose from auto camping sites of different sizes, A to C. A is for 12 people (5,150 yen overnight), B is for 8 people (4,100 yen), and C is for 6 people (3,100 yen)

Site C also has eight pet-only sites. There is a dog run area, so it's recommended for those who want to camp with their pets

Free Camping Site

The free site is cheaper (accommodation: 1,550 yen). However, good spots such as shady spots tend to fill up quickly, so it is not suitable for beginners

Free sites are recommended for veterans and large groups, but if not, it is safer to choose an auto camping site

There are also cottages

For those who find pitching a tent troublesome or hate insects, there are also cottages available. There are 30 cottages in total

You can choose from five types of cottages, including barrier-free cottages, so those with disabilities can enjoy the experience with peace of mind

All cottages have a terrace where you can have a barbecue

The auto camping site is especially comfortable and recommended

The auto campsite has electricity. The kitchen has hot water, so it's comfortable even in the cold winter. There is also a coin laundry building, so you can do your laundry quickly

Site A's convenient facilities are highly rated

In particular, the A-class sites come with a power outlet, a hot water sink and a wooden table on-site, which you can use exclusively

■Power supply

Nowadays, camping can be extremely inconvenient if you don't have a power source. You want to be able to charge your smartphone or tablet. Flying a drone in nature is especially fun

If you bring a drone, it's safer to have a power source, and you can also use the refrigerator if there is a power source

■Hot water sink

If you have a hot water sink right in front of you and it's yours to use, you can fill the pool with hot water and turn it into a heated pool. Kids will love it

When camping, washing dishes and cooking utensils can be a struggle, so having hot water available makes it much easier to remove grease stains, so that's another big benefit

Large wooden table

Having a wooden table is convenient as it eliminates wobbling and requires no assembly. Although it is expensive, the A site is recommended for families with small children as it allows them to stretch out freely

Convenient points of Eco Camp Michinoku

There is a shop where you can buy firewood. Of course, they also sell drinks and snacks. The prices are reasonable, so you don't have to worry about that

For those who want to have a barbecue but don't want to go through the hassle of preparing it, you can purchase ingredients that have already been cut and are ready to grill (reservations required)

Many people imagine campsite toilets to be smelly and unclean, but Eco Camp Michinoku's toilets have a reputation for being extremely clean

Summary of Eco Camp Michinoku

This time, we introduced Eco Camp Michinoku, a campsite that is easy to use even for beginners. There are many play areas in the surrounding area, and they have planned hands-on events and homemade games (such as getting a free stay if you throw a super ball into a small hole), so you won't get bored

Even if you go empty-handed, you can still rent equipment, but please note that you must make a reservation before using it

• If you don't like crowds and want to enjoy Sensoji Temple, go see the night illuminations!

If you don't like crowds and want to enjoy Sensoji Temple, go see the night illuminations!

Nakamise

When visiting Asakusa, Tokyo, you can't miss Sensoji Temple.
There are many things to see, such as the huge Kaminarimon Gate, the multi-story pagoda, and the Nakamise shopping arcade.
Recently, it has also become a great spot to view the Skytree from below, so it is always crowded with tourists.

Yes, it's always crowded!
For those who don't like crowds or get motion sickness, this crowded tourist scene is not a pleasant experience. It's
no wonder that some people skip it, even though it's one of Tokyo's most popular tourist destinations.

However, it would be a shame to come all the way to Tokyo and not visit Sensoji Temple!
So, this time we will introduce another side of Sensoji Temple that can only be enjoyed by people who don't like crowds!

What is Sensoji Temple?

Sensoji Temple Kaminarimon Gate

For those who don't know what Sensoji Temple is, let me explain.
Sensoji Temple is a sacred place of Kannon Bodhisattva with a history of nearly 1,400 years.

Even if you're not familiar with Sensoji Temple, you've probably seen the gate with the giant red lantern hanging from it with the word "Kaminarimon" written on it. Its
official name is "Furaijinmon Gate," and it is the main gate of Sensoji Temple, with the wind god and thunder god enshrined on either side of the gate.

Once you pass through Kaminarimon Gate, you will see Nakamise Street.
The main approach to Sensoji Temple stretches for about 250 meters from Kaminarimon Gate to Hozomon Gate, and vermilion-lacquered stores line both sides of the approach.
This is Nakamise Shopping Street, one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan.
It is incredibly lively, with tourists from Japan and abroad visiting every day.

Next comes the Hozomon Gate.
Previously, it was also called Niomon Gate because of the two Nio statues enshrined on both ends.
After it was destroyed in the Great Tokyo Air Raid, it was rebuilt and given the name Hozomon Gate because it houses the sutras and temple treasures.

And the main hall.
It is also called the Kannon Hall because it enshrines the Bodhisattva Kannon.

Having seen all of this, you can say that you have been to Sensoji Temple for the first time.
There are many other things worth seeing, such as the five-story pagoda, Kagetsu Hall, Yakushi Hall, Awashima Hall, and Denpoin Temple.
However, as it is one of Japan's most famous tourist destinations, it is crowded everywhere. This is
not ideal for people who don't like crowds.
So, what can people like you do to enjoy Sensoji Temple?

If you're going to Sensoji Temple, we recommend going at night! Here's why!

I wrote earlier that Sensoji Temple is "always" crowded with tourists, but this is actually misleading.
I was using the word "always" to mean "every day."
In fact, there is a time of day when Sensoji Temple is not crowded.
That time is "night."

At night, the Nakamise shopping street closes, and the main hall closes as well.
Tourists assume that there is nothing left to see, and so they don't flock there.
However, Sensoji Temple at night actually has many wonderful sights that you can't see during the day!

The lighting is beautiful!

Five-story pagoda and Hozomon gate

One of the highlights of Sensoji Temple at night is the illuminations.
The illuminations began on October 1, 2003, as part of a project to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Edo shogunate.

When Sensoji Temple is lit up at night, the main hall, Kaminarimon Gate, five-story pagoda, and Hozomon Gate are illuminated.
Photos of the Hozomon Gate and the five-story pagoda together are particularly spectacular.
Don't forget to take some photos!

Although it is not related to Sensoji Temple, the Skytree, which can be seen from Sensoji Temple, is also beautifully lit up, so we recommend checking it out as well!

Nakamise Shutter Mural "Asakusa Picture Scroll"

Shutter mural

Nakamise Street is not only fun during business hours.
In fact, it displays another charm after the shutters are closed.
That is the Nakamise Shutter Mural "Asakusa Emaki."

"Asakusa Emaki" is the face of Nakamise Street at night, completed in 1989.
Painted by a distinguished team under the supervision of Professor Hirayama and Assistant Professor Fukui of Tokyo University of the Arts, the mural is a delight to visitors.

The 400m long mural depicts the history of Asakusa and seasonal events.
It symbolizes Japanese culture and will surely become one of Sensoji's legacies that should be preserved for future generations.

If you don't like crowds, we recommend going at night

Sensoji Temple is a popular tourist spot for foreigners and school trippers,
which can be a big problem for people who dislike crowds.

If you are one of those people, why not try visiting at night?
Its charm, which is completely different from the daytime, will add color to your trip!

[Kami-gun, Miyagi Prefecture] Wedding in the garden! ? Let's enjoy flowers at "Yakurai Garden"!

Yakurai Garden

Mount Yakurai is a cone-shaped mountain located in northern Miyagi Prefecture, on the road from Kami District to Yamagata Prefecture.

Although it is only 533m above sea level, its beautiful shape has earned it the nickname "Kami Fuji" after the name of Kami County. Did you know that there is also a beautiful flower garden spread out on the mountainside?

Yakurai Garden. This time we will introduce one of the most gorgeous parks in Yakurai Resort

Yakurai Mountain is a sacred mountain with many legends

Mount Yakurai is a small, independent peak located northeast of Mount Funagata, which has a wide base. Its beautiful shape can be seen even from Furukawa, as it is surrounded by the Osaki Plain, which is covered with rice paddies and farmland

Mount Yakurai has been the site of many legends since ancient times, and one of the most unique is the story of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who is also taught in history textbooks

During the Heian period, Shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, who was on an expedition to the Tohoku region, shot a huge arrow measuring over 2 meters from Mt. Yodogawa in Wakuya. He sent his subordinates to search for it, but they were unable to find it after three days and three nights of searching

"The reason we can't find such a big arrow is because the mountain has eaten it." That is why this mountain was named "Yakurai-san" (Yarakurai Mountain)

The 2m arrow, the fact that it arrived from Wakui, and the conclusion that the mountain was hit by the arrow are all absurd, but that is perhaps why the story has been passed down to the present day

What is Yakurai Garden?

• Let's meet Matsuo Basho in Fukagawa!

Let's meet Matsuo Basho in Fukagawa!

Mannenbashi Bridge, which spans the mouth of the Sumida River and Onagi River

A bronze statue of Matsuo Basho stands on the bank where the Sumida River and Onagi River intersect. Basho once lived on the bank near Fukagawa's Mannenbashi Bridge. Why not visit the bronze statue of Basho, located in the same place where he once lived?

Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige depicted Mannenbashi Bridge in their ukiyo-e prints!

Fukagawa's landmark, Mannenbashi Bridge

Mannenbashi Bridge was a wooden drum bridge during the Edo period. It seems that Mannenbashi Bridge was located here in 1680. The place where Matsuo Basho lived is just a two-minute walk from here

Katsushika Hokusai once depicted Mount Fuji as seen from Taiko Bridge in his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Utagawa Hiroshige also depicted Mannen Bridge in his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
Incidentally, the current Mannen Bridge was built in 1930. Since 2009, it has been lit up, and is now a landmark of Fukagawa.

Mannenbashi Bridge, which was also used as a filming location for Doctor X

Today, Mannenbashi Bridge has been used as a filming location for various TV dramas. One of the most famous is Doctor X. In the setting of the drama, the Kanbara Consultation Center run by Kanbara Akira, played by Kishibe Ittoku, who often plays mahjong with the group, was located very close to Mannenbashi Bridge

Therefore, Mannenbashi Bridge has appeared throughout the series, from the first film onwards. In fact, it was on this bridge that both Jonouchi Sensei, played by Uchida Yuki, and Daimon Sensei, played by Yonekura Ryoko, fell ill. Be sure to check it out on DVD or in reruns

The Onagi River and Sumida River seen from Mannenbashi Bridge

The Onagi River began as an artificial river - a canal - built to transport salt produced in Gyotoku, Chiba Prefecture, to Edo Castle after Tokugawa Ieyasu was ordered by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to move his territory to Kanto.
Later, during the Tokugawa shogunate, it became an important transportation route for logistics, transporting not only salt from Gyotoku, but also rice tax from the Tohoku region and vegetables and fish from the area of Chiba to Edo. Matsuo Basho lived on the banks of the Onagi River, which was bustling with ships transporting goods to Edo.

Basho Inari Shrine

Basho Inari Shrine is located close to Mannen Bridge. After a tsunami hit this area in 1917, a stone frog that Basho is said to have once loved was discovered. This discovery led to the founding of Basho Inari Shrine. It is said that the famous haiku "An old pond, a frog jumps in, the sound of water" was written around here

During the Edo period, a very large "Masaki tree" stood near the current shrine, and it seems to have served as a landmark for ships passing through the Sumida River and Onagi River. Matsuo Basho is said to have lived right next to this large "Masaki tree."

It's finally time to meet Basho!

Bashoan Historic Site Observation Garden

The Basho-an Historical Site Observation Garden is located along the Sumida River promenade. It was built in April 1995 as a branch of the nearby Koto Ward Basho Memorial Museum, commemorating the fact that it was once Basho's residence. The Basho-an Historical Site Observation Garden is located at the top of the stairs in front

Basho gazing at the Sumida River

At the top of the stairs, in the Bashoan Historical Site Observation Garden, you will find a bronze statue of Matsuo Basho. Matsuo Basho was a haiku poet born in what is now Iga City, Mie Prefecture. He learned from his teacher in Kyoto and embarked on the path of haiku poetry. He published numerous works in Edo in 1674, and became famous in the world of haiku

In Edo, he lived in Nihonbashi, but after the Great Fire of Meireki, which burned down two-thirds of Edo, he moved to this area in Fukagawa, where he lived until his death in 1694

Basho is actually electrically operated

This bronze statue of Basho sits on a cushion facing the Sumida River until just before 5pm, as shown in the photo. However, at 5pm, it rotates around and faces the Onagi River. It rotates electrically

It is lit up until 10pm at night. You can see it from the Sumida River promenade. Unfortunately, the garden closes at 4:30pm, so you won't be able to see the moment Basho turns around. By the way, admission to this garden is free

• Let's soak up the sea breeze at the Tokugawa Shogun's Hama Palace ~ Hamarikyu Gardens

Let's soak up the sea breeze at the Tokugawa Shogun's Hama Palace ~ Hamarikyu Gardens

Otemon Gate entrance to Hamarikyu Gardens

Hama Rikyu Gardens is the Hama Palace associated with the Tokugawa Shogunate. It is now a metropolitan garden, but during the Meiji period it was used as a detached palace for the Imperial family and for diplomatic purposes. Today, let's take a stroll through the remains of the Hama Palace of the Tokugawa Shogunate

The famous "Three Hundred Year Pine" is one of the largest black pines in Tokyo

300 year old pine

Hama Rikyu Gardens was originally the secondary residence of the Kofu domain. In 1654 (the third year of the Shoo era), Tokugawa Tsunashige, the lord of Kofu, received this land as a gift from the Tokugawa shogunate. Later, Tokugawa Tsunashige's son, Tokugawa Tsunatoyo, became the sixth shogun, Tokugawa Ienobu. This marked the end of the Kofu domain, and the area became a tenryo directly ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate. At the same time, this garden became the Tokugawa shogunate's Hama Palace. It is said that the famous 300-year-old pine tree was planted by Tokugawa Ienobu at that time. It is home to one of the largest black pines in Tokyo, and its vitality makes it known as a power spot for longevity and prosperity

Seasonal flower fields

The high-rise buildings of Shiodome stand out, but the vacant lot in the foreground is no ordinary vacant lot. This is a flower garden. In spring, nanohana flowers turn everything yellow, and in autumn, yellow cosmos flowers turn the entire lot orange, coloring it all. In the green space, during the Edo period, many storehouses were lined up where rice and rice seeds were stored in preparation for famine. It is now a garden, but during the Tokugawa shogunate, it was such an important facility that it even housed the shogunate's gunpowder storehouse

The "Shioiri Pond" where the Shogun enjoyed boating

Nakajima Chaya is in the center

The pond you see here is not a natural sight. It is an artificial pond called "Oisensui" (Great Spring Water), created by humans. It is called "Shioiri Pond" because it draws seawater from Tokyo Bay. Four teahouses were built around this pond

The teahouse in the middle of the pond is Nakajima's Teahouse. There is now a bridge called Otsutaibashi across the pond, but during the Edo period there was no bridge and the Shogun travelled by boat from Edo Castle to Nakajima's Teahouse. It is said that Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the last Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, ate castella cake at Nakajima's Teahouse

Tsubame Tea House

Hawk Teahouse

Matsu no Ochaya

During the Edo period, there were three teahouses on the banks of the Great Spring: Matsu no Ochaya, Tsubame no Ochaya, and Hawk no Ochaya. Based on documents from the Hama Palace during the reign of the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government recreated Matsu no Ochaya in 2010, restored Tsubame no Ochaya in 2015, and finally restored Hawk no Ochaya in April 2018

By the way, since the pond is filled with seawater, the fish that live here are sea mullet, seigo, goby, and other sea fish. You can also see sakka crabs, sea lice, and barnacles

The duck hunting grounds where the Shogun hunted ducks

A peek into the duck pond

A wooden mallet to summon the ducks and a bamboo tube to feed them

A "duck hunting ground" is a place for duck hunting, and there are two within the garden: the Koshindo Duck Hunt and the Shinzenza Duck Hunt. In both cases, the pond and forest are surrounded by a bank about 3 meters high, and the bank is lined with trees to hide the pond from the outside. This is so that the ducks can rest in peace

The photo above shows the Koshindo Duck Hunt, which was built in 1778. The photo below shows a monitoring post for feeding the ducks that gather around the pond. Wild ducks were kept in the pond to lure them into a false sense of security. At the appointed time, they would be called in by hitting a wooden mallet and food would be fed from a bamboo tube

Behind the Scenes

Drilling

Several waterways have been dug into a secluded pond surrounded by trees to make it appear safe for the ducks. This is the moat. At the back of the moat is a secluded pond where the ducks think it is safe. The ducks kept as decoy are notified with a wooden mallet that it is feeding time, and the wild ducks follow them. At that time, the ducks are scooped up with nets from both sides of the bank. Any ducks that escape the nets are shot with arrows

Shogun's exclusive dock, "Shogun Oagariba"

The stone steps are where the Shogun gets up

The missing parts are traces of damage caused by Typhoon Kitty in 1949

Towards the end of the Edo period, the Shogunate Navy Training Center was located in the Tokugawa Shogunate's Hamagoten. Katsu Kaishu was in charge of this facility. Sakamoto Ryoma, who became Katsu Kaishu's disciple, also joined the staff. The Shogun Oagariba was a dock exclusively for the Tokugawa Shoguns. Whenever the Shogun boarded a warship, he would board a boat from here and board the warship anchored offshore

People also disembarked from warships by boat here. The 15th shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, who was defeated in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, also disembarked here. It is said that Katsu Kaishu was summoned to greet Yoshinobu here and entrusted him with everything that would come afterwards. It is also said that Hijikata Toshizo and other members of the Shinsengumi boarded Tokugawa Shogunate warships and disembarked here

How was it?

After the Tokugawa Shogunate was abolished with the Meiji era, this became a detached palace for the Imperial family. Emperor Meiji is said to have hosted foreign institutions here to conduct diplomatic activities. Hama Rikyu was burned to the ground in the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo Air Raids, but the "Three Hundred Year Pine" remains intact from the Edo period. Why not come and feel the sea breeze at the same place where the Tokugawa Shoguns once came to cool off?
