Mochi is famous from northern Miyagi to southern Iwate.
Mochi culture is so developed that Ichinoseki City in Iwate hosts the National Mochi Summit every year.
However, northern Miyagi is not far behind.
Freshly made mochi is placed in a bowl and then generously topped with bean paste, kinako (soybean flour), zunda (sweet red bean paste), walnuts, or other fillings. This farm-fresh sweet is enjoyed widely, centered around Wakuya Town!

Ganzuki

Ganzuki is a farm-fresh sweet that looks like a chocolate brownie and is also written as 雁月.
It is a local dish that tastes like a fluffy sugar steamed bun, but contains soy sauce, giving it a Japanese flavor.
Its unique name is said to come from the sesame seeds scattered on the round dough, which resemble the moon and wild geese. It is found mainly in northern Miyagi Prefecture and has spread as far north as Iwate Prefecture, so you can find it at farm-fresh stores all over the country.

Ganzuki

The ganzuki sold at "Kogane no Sato," a direct-from-the-farm shop attached to the hot spring facility "Wakuya Tenpyo no Yu," is a rare type that is densely packed rather than plump.
The texture is almost like a chocolate cake.
Whether you're trying ganzuki for the first time or have eaten it many times, why not give it a try?
