Mt. Iwate

[Iwate] The famous mountain “Mt. Iwate” also called Iwate Fuji

One of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains that Iwate is proud of

Mt. Iwate, also known as Iwate Fuji, is a famous mountain that is a symbol of Iwate Prefecture.

The majestic shape of the mountain can be seen from Morioka city, and it is so conspicuous that it can be seen at a glance. With an altitude of 2038 meters, it is also famous as the highest mountain in Iwate Prefecture. It is famous as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, and welcomes many climbers during the summer mountain season.

When viewed from a distance, it often looks like one peak, but it is actually two stratovolcanoes joined together. To be more precise, there are Nishi Iwate Volcano and Higashi Iwate Volcano, and the mountain area also includes a caldera topography.

Volcanic activity has been occurring at this location for about 7,000 years, and phreatic explosions have occurred several times. The eruption in 1732 spewed out a lava flow, and it has been designated as a national natural monument. After a small eruption in 1919, there have been occasional increases in seismic activity, but current conditions have remained calm.

Thanks to the volcano's peaceful nature, it is now a popular tourist destination year-round. Climbing routes are available from Hachimantai City and elsewhere, so you can choose one that suits your physical strength and experience. Once you reach the top of the mountain, you can get a panoramic view of Iwate Prefecture. Mt. Iwate is also a volcano that becomes even more attractive during the fall foliage season. At scenic spots such as the Yakehashiri Lava Flow, the rugged volcanic topography and the beautiful shape of Mt. Iwate harmonize to create a unique beauty.

Since it exists independently within the Ou Mountains, you can experience its overwhelming scale when enjoying the autumn leaves. In winter, you can see Mt. Iwate shining in silver from Morioka City. This appearance is reminiscent of Mt. Fuji, and its graceful base is particularly impressive. The beauty of the mountain is especially striking when viewed from the Kaiun Bridge over the Kitakami River. The view from the windows of the Shinkansen and conventional trains that pass through Iwate Prefecture is spectacular, so it's not uncommon for tourists to take pictures.
