[Misawa City, Aomori Prefecture] Misawa Aviation Science Museum has a wide selection of rare aircraft! Experience the air pocket!

The Aomori Prefectural Misawa Aviation and Science Museum is one of the largest aeronautical science museums in Japan. The museum also has a large site outside the museum, large enough to fit two Tokyo Domes. It is an aviation plaza called "Misawa City Ozora Hiroba." There are also playground equipment, so it's a popular place for families to spend time

Open Sky Plaza where 11 aircraft are stationed

There are 11 aircraft on display in the square, including famous models such as the F4 and F16. This is the only place outside of the base where you can see these aircraft. Not only can you see them, but you can also take a flight in one of them. The flight experience is conducted on the supersonic fighter jets F-104J and T-3

You can tour the interior of two aircraft: the UP-3A, the US Navy's aircraft carrying senior officials, and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's aircraft

Rare aircraft are also on display inside the museum

This is the only remaining G760 twin-engine advanced trainer, making it an extremely rare aircraft. 1,342 of these aircraft were previously built by Tachikawa Aircraft. The aircraft housed in the Misawa Aviation Science Museum was salvaged from the bottom of Lake Towada in 2012, where it had lain dormant for 69 years. Documents showing the salvage process are also on display. Many visitors come to enjoy this aircraft, which is alive with a real drama

The museum is characterized by the many rare aircraft on display that are a delight for enthusiasts. In addition to the aircraft introduced above, there are also the "YS11," the first domestically produced aircraft after the war, the "Zero Fighter Type 21," the aircraft used in the film "Yamamoto Isoroku (2011)," and the "Miss Veedol," the aircraft that achieved the world's first non-stop flight across the Pacific Ocean

Staff members are stationed near the aircraft in the museum and will patiently answer any questions you may have. They will explain the unknown anecdotes and history of each aircraft. Listening to them as you look around will help you gain a deeper understanding

The hands-on corner in the science zone is popular

The appeal of Misawa Aviation Science Museum is not just the sight of aircraft. The science zone, where you can experience flying, is also popular. Many people have commented that they particularly enjoyed the free-fall experience device called "Probe IV."

Probe IV allows you to experience the air pocket phenomenon. A capsule carrying six people is lifted up by the force of the air inside a large tube. After that, the air flow is stopped, creating an air pocket, causing the capsule to fall instantly. It is an extraordinary experience

In addition to this, there are many other events planned that allow visitors to experience science, making this a place that can be enjoyed by both adults and children

Summary of Misawa Aviation Science Museum

The museum is divided into a main building and an annex. The main building houses the aircraft exhibits and science zones we've introduced so far, while the annex houses a museum shop and cafe

The museum shop sells the same space food astronauts eat, as well as space curry and space takoyaki, making them perfect souvenirs. The cafe serves dishes such as the original Misawa-originated barayaki and squid tempura bowls

Misawa Aviation Science Museum is an aviation theme park with all kinds of amusements, and is a spot you can enjoy all day long
