Nezumigaseki, where Matsuo Basho is said to have passed, is located in the southwest of Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, on the border with Niigata Prefecture. When Yamagata Prefecture was called Oshu (Mutsu Province, Dewa Province), it was one of the three Oshu checkpoints, known as the Shirakawa Checkpoint.
