"monaka" opens in Mannaka Sakanacho, Morioka! Let's go and see Mona! [Iwate Prefecture]

On July 11, 2024, a new commercial complex called "monaka" opened at the entrance to Sakanamachi Arcade in Morioka City, with one basement floor and four above-ground floors .

-ness , with tenants that are a bit different from the large national chain shopping malls, including a market where local shops that support the local community gather, and delicious local gourmet food and sweets .

In this three-part article, including this one, we will introduce "monaka," which has been visited by many people every day since its opening, bringing new excitement to Sakanamachi Arcade Shopping Street!


What is "monaka"?

The Kawanami area, where Sakanamachi Shopping Street is located, has a history as a commercial town dating back to the Edo period

Hotline Sakanamachi , the longest arcade in the northern Tohoku region, covered by a 365-meter-long all-weather arcade. This shopping district allows you to shop without worrying about your footing even in the snowy winter.

Hotline Sakanamachi is home to approximately 80 stores, and was selected as one of the "77 Most Hardworking Shopping Districts

Although it is a little far from Morioka Station, the Morioka Bus Center is located nearby, making it easily accessible from both inside and outside Morioka city, and it is a shopping street that many local residents visit by bus to shop

Where Monaca now stands, there used to be three commercial facilities, all of which were beloved and well-known by locals

Many Morioka residents who were nostalgic for the past called for the revival of the Sakanamachi Arcade commercial facilities, and the birth of "Monaka" was eagerly awaited

Kawatoku

Parc Avenue Kawatoku , a long-established department store in Saien, Morioka City, which will soon celebrate its 160th anniversary of operation, operated in the same location as Monaka for 105 years, from 1875 (Meiji 8) to 1980 (Showa 55).

Many Morioka residents over the age of 60 still remember Kawatoku, which was located in Sakanamachi

Third year of junior high school

Nakasan, headquartered in Aomori, acquired Kawatoku's former store in May 1981 and opened its Morioka store

However, with the expansion of large American-style shopping centers into the northern Tohoku region, sales fell and many of the stores in the area were closed.The Great East Japan Earthquake was also a distant cause, and the Morioka store was forced to close in 2011 (Heisei 23)

The Nakasan Morioka store had been closed, but in October 2012, Tokyo-based Milestone Turnaround Management took over the business and opened Nanakku

Like Monaca, it was a convenient facility housing a fresh food store, restaurants, general stores, and more. However, due to the building's aging, maintenance costs and the need for earthquake-resistant reinforcement work, as well as financial difficulties at the head office, it closed in June 2019
