2017 SENDAI pageant of light! A thorough explanation of this year's highlights!

This winter as well, the light of Sendai's citizens' hearts will be lit on Jozenji Street.

Speaking of Sendai's winter tradition, it's the ``SENDAI Pageant of Lights''!

As many as 600,000 LED light bulbs will be installed along the zelkova trees along Jozenji Street, brightening up the nights in Sendai.

This year's event starts on December 8th!

In this article, we will introduce the highlights of the upcoming 32nd "SENDAI Pageant of Light ~ Let's all light up the light in our hearts ~"!

What is SENDAI Pageant of Light?

The SENDAI Pageant of Light is a winter light-up event held on Jozenji Street, a row of zelkova trees in downtown Sendai.

The first one was held in 1986, and this year marks the 32nd time.

It is a big event that represents Sendai's winter, attracting over 2.5 million visitors every year.

The illuminations installed along the zelkova trees were jointly developed by an executive committee called ``Starlight Leaf'' and a light bulb manufacturer.

This was also used at Tokyo Disney Resort, but from 2009 they will gradually change to LED bulbs called "Pageant of Light."

During the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, all of the LEDs were damaged by the tsunami, but the event was held successfully thanks to donations and LEDs from all over the country.

This event gave momentum to the reconstruction of Tohoku.

The Pageant of Lights, which has continued without interruption since 1986, is actually not an event centered around the prefecture or city, but an event that grew mainly from citizen volunteers.

Growing with donations from citizens! Crowdfunding this year too! ?

The Pageant of Lights has inherited the philosophy of ``From a City of Forests to a City of Lights,'' and has been developed by citizens and volunteers.

Much of the funding for the event comes from donations from citizens.

Every year, donation boxes and bottles are set up at supermarkets and department stores throughout Sendai City, and the event is held with the cooperation of citizens.

This year, we will also try the popular crowdfunding.

Highlights of SENDAI Pageant of Light 2017! ?

• Mitsui Fudosan Realty Tohoku presents Starlight Wink
  600,000 light bulbs go out all at once, then turn back on all at once about a minute later.
  This is a signature event of the SENDAI Page of Lights, where visitors cheer when the lights are relit every year.
  During the event period, it will be held three times a day (18:00, 19:00, 20:00), but the time will be changed only on the 23rd because "Santa's Forest Story" will be held.
• Life Support System presents Pageant Car A
  pageant car decorated with glittering lights and driven by a cheerful Santa.
  We are looking for fellow passengers, and two groups per day can ride around the pageant with Santa for 45 minutes.
  Passengers will be selected by lottery, but crowdfunding supporters will be selected first, so if you really want to ride, support us through crowdfunding!

  STARLIGHT☆WINK CONCERT The piano performance accompanied by Starlight Wink will lead you to a fantastic world of light and sound.

• Re-Style FES!
  This is an event that calls for understanding and action regarding the 3Rs through the rental of reused tableware and stage events.
  Let's go to Kotodai Park Citizen Square on December 23rd (Saturday/Holiday) and 24th (Sunday)!
• Sendai Winter Park - Starlight Rink -
  Sendai is the birthplace of figure skating in Japan, where athletes Arakawa and Hanyu were born.
  An ice skating rink will be set up at the Kotodai Park Civic Plaza from December 8th to December 25th, so why not aim for a gold medal this winter?
• Kahopyon Fantasy Park
  Kotodai Park is illuminated with white-based illuminations.
  The mysterious light that is different from the light on Jozenji Street is also beautiful!

  In addition, an exhibition of works from the photography contest will be held at the Jozenji Gallery on the 1st floor of the Sendai Jozenji Building during the event period, so you can see past prize-winning works.
• SoftBank presents Santa's Forest Story
  Many Santas and reindeer dressed as citizens and marching bands will be paraded down Jozenji Street.
  There will also be performances such as music and dance, so keep an eye out.
  It will be held on December 23rd (Saturday/Holiday) from 17:30 to 19:45.
• Loople Sendai Pageant of Lights
  The municipal bus Loople Sendai, which circulates around the city of Sendai, will run a special service during the pageant period.
  It's fun to watch the pageant while riding on a bus with a retro atmosphere!
• 2017 SENDAI Pageant of Light in Izumi Park
  Town On the main street of Izumi Park Town in the north of Sendai city, you can see a mini pageant of light using 100,000 LEDs, the same ones used in the original SENDAI pageant of light.
