Matsuo Basho, famous for his travelogue "Oku no Hosomichi" (The Narrow Road to the Deep North) , which chronicles his journey from Edo with his disciple Kawai Sora, through Tohoku and Hokuriku, to Ogaki in Mino Province, is said to have passed away on October 12, 1694 , in a rented room of Hanaya Nizaemon, located in what is now Kyutaro-cho, Chuo-ku, Osaka City.

The next day, his remains were transported to Gichu-ji Temple in Omi Province (present-day Shiga Prefecture) and, according to his will, were buried next to the tomb of Minamoto no Yoshinaka , a warrior from the late Heian period and a cousin of the brothers Minamoto no Yoritomo and Yoshitsune

For this reason,October 12thisBasho Memorial Dayand is also a seasonal word in haiku poetry.
