Matsuo Basho, famous for "Oku no Hosomichi," which chronicles his journey from Edo accompanied by his disciple Kawai Sora, through the Tohoku region and Hokuriku to Ogaki in Mino Province, is said to have passed away on October 12, 1694 (Genroku 7) , in a rented room owned by Hanaya Nizaemon, located in what is now Kyutarocho, Chuo Ward, Osaka City.

The next day, his body was taken to Gichu-ji Temple in Omi (Shiga Prefecture), and in accordance with his will, he was buried next to the grave of Kiso Yoshinaka, a military commander from the late Heian period who was a cousin of the brothers Minamoto no Yoritomo and Yoshitsune

For this reason, October 12th is Basho 's memorial day and is also a seasonal word in haiku.
