Date Masamune, the 17th head of the Date clan and first lord of the Sendai domain, died at his Sakurada residence in Edo on May 24, 1636 (June 27, 1636 in the Gregorian calendar). He was 70 years old (68 years old at the time of his death). Fifteen vassals and five vassals (vassals of vassals) committed suicide, and in mourning, fishing, bird catching, and music were prohibited for seven days in Edo and three days in Kyoto. Zuiganji Temple is a Rinzai sect temple located in Matsushima Town, Miyagi County, Miyagi Prefecture. Its official name, including the mountain name, is Matsushima Seiryuzan Zuigan Enpuku Zenji (Shoto Seiryuzan Zuigan Enpuku Zenji). It occupies a corner of the scenic Matsushima landscape, known as one of the "Three Views of Japan." The temple's Godaido Hall towers over the rocky outcrop in front of the temple gate, and the pier for sightseeing boats to tour the island is visible, making it a popular tourist destination. Founded by Ennin, the Tendai sect temple, Zuiganji's origins are recorded in the Tendai-ki, a book believed to have been established during the Nanboku-cho period or the early Muromachi period.
