[Miyagi] Matsushima, one of Japan's three most scenic spots, along with Miyajima and Amanohashidate

Matsushima refers to Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture, the more than 260 islands surrounding it, and the hills that encircle the area.
The beautiful scenery created by the ria coastline, which has been eroded over many years, is so stunning that even Matsuo Basho, the famous haiku poet, was unable to compose a poem about it. It is also counted as one of Japan's three most scenic views, alongside Miyajima and Amanohashidate.

If you come to Matsushima to enjoy the view, you can't miss the Four Great Views. These were selected by the Edo period Confucian scholar Shuzan Mannen, and you can enjoy different views from a total of four spectacular scenic spots

First, the view from Otakamori on Miyato Island is spectacular.
From the eastern end of the bay, you can see westward and enjoy a view adorned with a beautiful sunset.

Next, there is the beautiful view from Daigyoji Temple in Tomiyama, Matsushima Town.
Facing south, you can see the entire bay and Okumatsushima, and the harmony between the islands scattered in the sea and the sky is truly beautiful.

And what is known as Yukan is the view that can be seen from Ogidani.
The view overlooking Shiogama Bay to the southeast is adorned with vibrant autumn leaves, captivating tourists.

Finally, the view from Tamon-yama in Shichigahama Town is truly magnificent.
The majestic and awe-inspiring sight of the Pacific Ocean is breathtaking, and you can also enjoy watching the ships coming and going in the bay.

Since all of these scenic spots are located on mountaintops, it's best to travel by car, perhaps by renting a car. There are
also sightseeing boats of various sizes that sail the area, allowing you to enjoy the rich natural scenery up close.
Especially on calm days, smaller boats can even pass through sea caves, offering a truly spectacular view.
