[Miyagi] A spacious exhibition room and a night planetarium! Learn about the universe at Sendai City Astronomical Observatory
table of contents
Located a 30-minute drive from Sendai Station, on the outskirts of a quiet residential area, is the Sendai City Astronomical
Observatory. It relocated from Nishi Park to Nishikigaoka in 2008 and
reopened after renovations, becoming an even more accessible place where everyone can feel closer to the universe.
This time, we'll introduce the charms of the Sendai City Astronomical Observatory!
Experience the wonders of space in a spacious exhibition room

The spacious exhibition hall, reminiscent of the vast universe, is divided into four areas: "Earth," "Solar System," "The Universe," and "History of Astronomy," each offering a different theme to explore.
The Earth area covers topics such as the phases of the moon and the mechanisms behind auroras, while the Solar System area reveals the secrets of the solar system, including planetary introductions and solar observation methods. The Universe area explores the entire universe, covering topics like the life cycle of stars and methods for measuring distances to stars. The History of Astronomy area showcases the evolution of astronomy and displays nationally designated important cultural properties such as the armillary sphere, quadrant, and celestial globe. There
are also interactive exhibits, allowing visitors to learn about the mysteries of the universe through hands-on experiences, ensuring that even young children will enjoy the exhibits without getting bored.
Take a walk under the stars at the planetarium! Experience the wonders of space!
The main attraction of the Sendai City Astronomical Observatory is undoubtedly its planetarium. While the
observatory shows a variety of programs, my personal recommendation is "Starry Sky Time: A Stroll Through the Night Sky." It features live commentary on how to enjoy the night sky, focusing on the constellations and celestial bodies visible that night.
The content varies depending on the commentator, so you'll discover something new every time you listen. It
might be fun to visit multiple times and find your favorite commentator!
Enjoy music and art at the planetarium!
You can see more than just the starry sky at the planetarium.
Every Saturday night, they offer a "Night Planetarium" event where you can watch planetarium-based video productions.
They also hold "Music Time" events at certain times of the year,
allowing you to enjoy a wonderful time immersed in soothing music while gazing at the starry sky.
For details on the Night Planetarium shows and the schedule for "Music Time," please check the Sendai City Astronomical Observatory website.

The most convenient way to access the Sendai City Astronomical Observatory is to take a bus bound for "Nishikigaoka" from Sendai Station and get off at "Nishikigaoka 7-chome Kita/Observatory Entrance."
Other access options are available; please check the Sendai City Astronomical Observatory website for details.
