[Miyagi] Night planetarium in a large exhibition room! “Sendai City Astronomical Observatory” where you can learn about the universe
table of contents
Sendai City Astronomical Observatory is located 30 minutes by car from Sendai Station, on the outskirts of a quiet residential area.
In 2008, it moved from Nishi Park to Nishikigaoka and reopened after renovations.
It has been upgraded to become a place where anyone can feel closer to space.
In this article, we will introduce the charms of Sendai City Astronomical Observatory!
Experience the wonders of space in a spacious exhibition room

The large exhibition hall, which evokes the image of the vast universe, is divided into four areas: "Earth," "Solar System," "The Universe," and "History of Astronomy," and visitors can learn about each theme.
The Earth area covers the universe as seen from Earth, with topics like "The Phases of the Moon" and "The Mechanism Behind Auroras." The Solar System area explores the secrets of the solar system, with topics like "Introduction to the Planets" and "How Solar Observation Works." The Universe area explores the universe as a whole, with topics like "The Life of Stars" and "Methods of Measuring the Distance to Stars." The History of Astronomy area displays the evolution of astronomy and exhibits nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, such as the armillary sphere, quadrant, and celestial globe.
There is also a hands-on corner, so even small children can enjoy learning about the "mysteries of the universe" through hands-on experience.
Take a walk under the stars at the planetarium! Experience the wonders of space!
One of the attractions of Sendai City Astronomical Observatory is undoubtedly its planetarium.
The planetarium at Sendai City Astronomical Observatory projects a variety of programs, but my personal recommendation is "Starry Sky Time: Tonight's Starry Sky Walk." They provide live commentary on how to enjoy the starry sky, focusing on the constellations and celestial bodies that can be seen that night.
Each commentator picks up different topics, so no matter how many times you listen, you'll always discover something new.
It might be fun to go back multiple times and develop a favorite "fan" for your favorite commentator!
Enjoy music and art at the planetarium!
The planetarium doesn't just offer a starry sky view.
Every Saturday night, you can watch video productions using the planetarium, known as the Night Planetarium.
Depending on the season, they also hold "Music Time."
You can enjoy a wonderful time gazing at the starry sky while listening to soothing music.
For details on the Night Planetarium projections and the times when "Music Time" is shown, please check the Sendai City Astronomical Observatory website.

The most convenient way to get to Sendai City Astronomical Observatory is to take the bus bound for Nishikigaoka from Sendai Station and get off at Nishikigaoka 7-chome Kita, Observatory Entrance.
There are other ways to get there, so please check the Sendai City Astronomical Observatory website.
