Tagajo is a city with such a long history that it even appears in textbooks alongside the name of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. There is a history museum in Tagajo that houses a large collection of historical materials from the Tohoku region
It's called the Tohoku History Museum . It's a large-scale facility that displays the history of not only Tagajo and Miyagi Prefecture, but the entire Tohoku region, from the Paleolithic period to modern times, categorized by era.
This time, we went to this museum that can be enjoyed by both adults and children!
Creating culture in the 21st century! What is the Tohoku History Museum?
The Tohoku History Museum was established to "support the revitalization of the region and to create opportunities to think about 'Tohoku of tomorrow' by rediscovering and communicating the image of Tohoku." The facility was originally called the Tohoku History Museum in 1973, but was renovated in 1999 and reborn as the Tohoku History Museum
The nearest station is Kokufu Tagajo Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line and Senseki Line, and there are many historical sites in the surrounding area. Just walking around the area will make you think back to the waves of history
The building has a futuristic design, featuring a cylindrical entrance hall. The interior has a high ceiling and an open feel, allowing you to view the exhibits in a relaxed atmosphere
A comprehensive exhibition room divided into nine sections!
The exhibition rooms are divided into special exhibitions and permanent exhibitions, but this time we will introduce the permanent general exhibition room

The general exhibition room displays the history of Tohoku from the Paleolithic period to modern times. There are nine sections divided by era, each displaying historical materials collected from all over Tohoku
In the Jomon period corner, there is an exhibit entitled "Life in Oak Forests and Waterside," which recreates the lifestyle of the Jomon people. Be sure to take a look at the lives of the Jomon people, who built and lived in well-appointed houses!
Three themed exhibition rooms and a video exhibition room
The permanent exhibition ticket does not only allow you to visit the general exhibition hall
You can also visit three themed exhibition rooms that delve into themes that best represent the characteristics of the Tohoku region, as well as a video exhibition room where you can view original videos of intangible culture such as events, performing arts, and technology
The themed exhibition rooms feature exhibits on themes such as "Ethnic and Folk Arts," "Private Collections," and "Arts, Crafts, and History."
The exhibits, which are organized around a theme and mainly feature actual materials from the museum's collection, are subject to regular changes in theme and exhibits, allowing visitors to enjoy the exhibits multiple times.
In the video exhibition, videos of intangible cultural properties are projected onto a large 250-inch screen. Screenings are held twice a day. The videos are changed regularly, so be sure not to miss them! By the way, the chairs are incredibly comfortable, so you'll be able to blow away any fatigue you may have while watching the videos!
A free children's history museum where you can even try making a fire!

In addition to the exhibition rooms, the Tohoku History Museum also has a wide range of facilities, including a library and information room and a restaurant
One of the most recommended attractions is the Children's History Museum. You can learn about the history of Tohoku through 11 experiences based on 11 themes, such as "cutting," "touching," "wearing," and "assembling"!
We recommend the "Fire Making" work table, where you can try out old-fashioned fire-making methods such as "Kirimomi" and "Magiri"! It's very rare to find a facility that allows you to actually make a fire, so if you want to create some special memories, be sure to give it a try!
Take a break at the Konno family residence, built in the Edo period!

Outside the museum stands a traditional house
Konno Family Residence , which stands in contrast to the futuristic main building , is an Edo period house that was relocated from Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Miyagi Prefecture.
You are free to take your time looking around or take a break, so why not take a look around?
