[Tokyo] Experience the history of railways! Check out the highlights at Tokyo Station!

Tokyo Station is a key transportation hub in the capital city of Tokyo, and is well-known to everyone. While many people tend to leave quickly due to concerns about transfer times, the station is actually full of things to see. In this article, we'll introduce you to some of the highlights of Tokyo Station, where you can learn about its history!

Take a closer look at the restored Tokyo Station building

Tokyo Station, formerly known as the Central Station during the Meiji era, was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake and also required reconstruction due to the aging of the building. Four years after its designation as a National Important Cultural Property in 2003, preservation and restoration work on the Marunouchi Station building began and was completed in 2012.
The key point of this project was to utilize the original specifications of Tokyo Station as much as possible. Unsparing efforts were made to bring it as close to its original appearance as possible. The dome, which had been destroyed by fire, was also restored to a form close to its original state, and the eagle sculptures and zodiac reliefs inside were also reproduced.

A complete summary of the sights inside Tokyo Station!

While the extensive restoration work has often focused on the Tokyo Station building itself, there are many other things to see at Tokyo Station.
First, I'd like to introduce the "0-kilometer posts." Tokyo Station is the starting point for the Shinkansen and various conventional railway lines, and signs indicating this are installed on the platforms. Each 0-kilometer post has a different design, so it's sure to be fun to try and find them all!
Next, I'd like you to check out the pillars installed on platforms 5 and 6. These pillars have been there since 1914, when Tokyo Station opened. Be sure to see them before they are removed due to construction or other reasons.
Also, because Tokyo Station was a hub connecting the capital with the provinces, it was frequently used by influential figures in the political world. Within the station, there are plaques commemorating the attacks on Prime Minister Hara in 1921 and Prime Minister Hamaguchi in 1930.
